A friend of mine in the men's chorus says this whenever he wants to feign surprise. I always imagine him channeling Margaret Dumont. Of course, now that I'm a knitter, "clutching my purls" has a whole different meaning, especially when Silas barks at the UPS man, making me jump out of my sking and stitches jump off of my needles.
