Well, putting pictures on a local drive and then linking to them from the blog won't let anyone else see them. If you upload them to LJ's picture gallery, you can then link them and everyone can see them. You can also use any free service that lets you link (like Flickr) or your own web space, if you have some. (I have web space that I pay for specifically, and then more web space that we get through our ISP.)
It seems my pics are going into LiveJournal's Scrapbook function without any prompting from me. So there should be no worries as far as pics are concerned.
These journals belong to us -- we can do whatever we want with them! The only problem with adding material to old entries is that other than you, few people are likely to see the mew material. But if you're keeping the journal mainly for yourself (as I am, believe it or not), then it's fine.
I've got my photos hosted on paid server space offered by Apple. If I were doing it all over again, though, I'd likely just use the LJ scrapbook feature.
I'm sorta still in panic mode about LiveJournal's potential demise, so I am prettying my journal up before PDF-ing it by some magic process, printing it, and reading it in the bathroom. Well, not really to read in the bathroom, but certainly to keep handy for rainy nights and cocktail parties starting to grow dull. :)
