Got up to Emma Lake Friday afternoon. Turned on my 98SE dial-up machine and downloaded the latest Norton anti-virus stuff, then took a look at e-mail ( Read more... )

Kim, I now expect you to come out and party hard with the crew next April (or whenever Tbones next CD release is!) There was MUCH pub crawling last April! haha!!

Arthur, that sucks regarding the comp issues. It is curious that problems started when you opened an email....and a green screen you say? Ouch. I only know of blue and black screens with Windows! Green is new to me! How long would you say the PC was on before you clicked on email and the problems arose? Just trying to get a feel if the timeline was similar to the description after the fact, when it was consitently locking up after a minute or so.

Regardless, that PC sounds sick. I would try to load Windows in safe mode and see how long it lasts. If it's still wacked in safe mode, the issues are serious. Save your data (if you are able) and I'd suggest it's time to reinstall windows. While not as bad as 95, Win98 periodically needs a new install!

Hey, Colin . . . .

The beast wasn't on more than five minutes before the problem began. Turned it on, downloaded Norton's virus definitions, went to check e-mail, wham. Safe mode . . . hadn't thought of that (and when I scandisk and defrag, I do it in safe mode too). What I forgot to mention above was that neither one of the CD drives in the machine could/would read the NEC recovery or restore disks (which is why I went into the BIOS . . . which didn't help).
