Room 511 [afternoon]

Feb 09, 2012 11:41

It was days like these when Dany wondered if a job might not be the worst thing. She'd initially thought she ought to be occupying her time otherwise, with nobler pursuits -- letters to Jorah, assassins sent after Joffrey, correspondence to neighboring villages and khalasars -- but since Jorah had tied her hands with this enforced hiding and was ( Read more... )

Freddie had not intending to intrude into anyone's room, but his PearPhone had suddenly lost all connectivity and he'd been wandering the dorm trying to get a signal.

He was chasing after that elusive first bar when he almost walked straight into Dany's room. Luckily, he stopped himself in the doorway.

"Oh, sorry," he said. "I kinda was... you know, not important." It was so geeky even he was ashamed to mention it. "Uhhh, hi."

Smooth, Fredward Benson.

Dany was kind of staring. "Are you ever without that thing?"

It seemed like a valid question to her, all things considered.

"Sometimes?" Freddie said. "I mean, most people carry their phones around with them. I don't use it all the time. There are some places where that's just wrong. Like, in bed. And I definitely don't take it in the shower, that would be silly."

"In public," she clarified, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "I've never seen you without it. I suppose the same could be said for most things people hold dear," she added, "but it seems almost a hindrance. And I don't have a phone, so I certainly don't always have mine on me."

"Oh, that," Freddie said. "Well, I guess I kinda do have it most of the time. I mean, you never know when your mom will call or you have to do emergency file management on the iCarly servers. And I guess in this case by 'you' I mean 'me'. Nobody else manages the iCarly servers."

He did, however, stow his phone away in his back pocket. "I wouldn't say I hold it dear, exactly."

"You know, where I'm from, we tell people things in person," she said, smiling more widely now. "Or send word by raven or horseman. Shockingly enough, though, life goes on, even without instant information. You might do well without your mother able to access you."

"Yeah, she has a tracking chip in my head," Freddie said. "I'm pretty sure if I missed a call from her she'd call the local police and ask them to hunt me down for her. It's kind of all... frijoles."

"I didn't understand about half of that," Dany admitted, though she winced. "She sounds a touch controlling, though."

Freddie had to nod in acknowledgment at that. "Basically, she put a thing in my head that tells her where I am. She put it in there when I was a toddler in case I toddled off, I guess."

"Useful technology, if a little...intrusive at your current age. What would happen if your tracking thing just stopped working?" Dany wondered thoughtfully.

"I'm pretty sure it sends off a, like, emergency signal if that happens," Freddie said. "Like one last call for help. It's never really happened, though. And the manual I found online for it was all in Spanish, and my Spanish is a little bit... queso."

Indeed it was, Freddie. Indeed it was.

"I'm afraid I only know two languages, and Spanish is not one," said Dany, who was silly enough to assume that 'queso' meant something pertinent. "So I will be of no help. Could you translate it using your pear thing?"

"The problem is the technical terms get a little messy when I use Zaplook's translator," Freddie said. "So I've got a basic idea, but not really an exact one. I mainly just hope it never happens, because I don't like the idea of something in my head breaking."

He was sometimes worried it would just shock his brain or something.

"It does sound like one of the worst places for that kind of a malfunction," Dany observed. "I'd hate being tethered that way, though."

"I don't really think of it as tethered, as just sort of... a failsafe. I mean, if I ever get kidnapped again, or abandoned in Japanm it might come in handy," Freddie said. "That doesn't happen all that often, but you never know."

"Mightn't your phone come in handy then?" she asked with a slight smile.
