Random weirdness - Haworth Churchyard Edition

Far too late, as usual, I finally got around to watching the 2009 ITV version of Wuthering Heights. I expected to enjoy it because, well, Emily Brontë provided some awesome source material. But I never expected to love it as much as I did. A lot of elements were altered or removed altogether, but that didn't bother me. Which I guess is somewhat ( Read more... )

I have to admit that I'm not that familiar with the story, except for what I've heard (forever!)over the years, and of course the names, Heathcliff (what a name!). Anyway, though, the clip looks very good. Hopefully, our local PBS will carry it some day. I've watched Jane Eyre on PBS, by her also famous sister, Charlotte.

Oh, everyone should read Wuthering Heights at least once. I first read it when I was twelve, and I hated it. I reread it when I was nineteen and liked it, but thought it inferior to Jane Eyre. After seeing the film, I decided to give it another try, and this time around I loved it. I still think Charlotte's book had a better narrative style, but Emily's plot and characterizations just blew me away. I'm not sure why I can appreciate that at 29 when I couldn't at nineteen. Maybe I've just matured.

If you want to give the novel a try, you can read it here. It's both free and legal, and the website offers epub format as well as text and html. I put it on my Nook and it looked great.

Thanks, I downloaded it to my desktop. I've got a free Kindle edition on my laptop, too, so I can always download it there. I'll challenge myself and see what I think.

Sometimes it's easier for me to get into that style of story when I see it in movie form, than in writing. Don't know why that is, since I'm quite fond of that period ever since I fell for WilliamI'll let you know if I get through it ( ... )

I went ahead and watched this version of Wuthering Heights simply because you posted about it. Thank you! I enjoyed it immensely. I had only ever seen the version with Ralph Fiennes before, and while it made me all teary, I think this version worked better for me. Man, did I ever feel the passion between Cathy and Heathcliff. I really liked Tom Hardy as Heathcliff. He did an excellent job.

You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I had never even heard of Tom Hardy before this (I've never seen Inception), but he's definitely on my radar now. What a talented man.

Tom Hardy is one of my favourite actors. Wuthering Heights is my favourite historical novel. I was on this mini series pretty much like white on rice :)

I can see why he's one of your favorites. I think he's the only actor who ever fully embodied the character of Heathcliff. (Although to be fair, it must be one hell of a tough role.) I haven't watched any of Tom Hardy's other films before, but I plan to now. He's incredible.

I agree. He was Heathcliff. Though I have a soft spot for Timothy Dalton as well. There never has been a Cathy I have liked, though...

Oh, if you want to see something else he has been in, you need to see The Virgin Queen. This is the role I discovered him in. He plays my big historical crush the Earl of Leicester :)
