Whatever is Buffy searching for? Not just any William will do? Is our William somehow lacking the requisite qualities? If she forsakes him, he will not last long. But why should she return, if he isn't part of the mission that she is apparently pursuing? It's all a dreadful muddle now.
Somehow, I don't think her letting him down easy is going to be any easier to take than Cecily's mocking dismissal, alas. And Italy seems to be a distant impossibility as escape in his present state.

Of course, that can't be a surprise to you guys. I seem to be biologically incapable of writing a story without angst. I wonder what that says about my psyche?

This is one story in which I'm always anxious for not being able to enter it and nudge them toward the important things: look, Buffy, he's feverish! Open up, William! Talk to each other, please!
