I remember reading many years ago an interview with James Marsters where he spoke about the fan reactions to the character of Spike. He was overwhelmed with the love for Spike, and said something like, "And then they gave him this poncy background, and (in tones of surprise) you guys loved it!"
I remember this, because I did not. I hated Spike's background. It felt like retconning, plus I had already read and fallen in love with one fan's interpretation of it, in which William the Bloody was in the Navy and wonderfully in character and which fitted all the known facts and was part of my personal canon for years.
This story always felt like fate's way of making it up to me.
Ah wonderful, just wonderful. Buffy's confusion about William who isn't Spike yet but will become him is so well done. Your first lines : Sometime in the next twelve months, he would be a killer. In a hundred and twenty some odd years, he would be compact and muscular, bleached and scarred. Clad in black leather. Snarky. In love with her. touched me hard.. and although I'm completely in love with Spike I can't help thinking that a man such as William , his potential as devoted lover and human being ...well, it's also marvelous if he's the one loving Buffy and getting her in the end ,because I was so heartbroken for him in the original version even if he 's on his way of becoming Spike but through so much suffering. Does it makes sense ?!
