Room 408, Wednesday Morning

Aug 25, 2010 15:23

Jak woke up to loud noise, and maybe if he had been anyone else, he would've been upset in that. But he knew what it meant: it was his communicator, coming back to life for the first time in a few weeks, and he couldn't scramble fast enough to get the message.

"Things are really starting to heat up out here, Jak. I know you've got your own thing ( Read more... )

Dinah had been meaning to check on Jak for a while now; with only two days left on the island, and the party tonight and a million years of packing to do, she figured it was a good idea to see him sooner rather than later.

She paused in the door when she saw he was packing. "You off on another mission?"

Dinah considered, then stepped next to him, held out her phone, and took a shot of them together. Snap! Then said, "I'll send it to your phone. That's easier." And hit the button to make it so. "And if you lose it... enh." She smiled. "Sometimes it's just fun to give things to someone. And now I wish I had a going-away present for you."

"I don't need much," Jak said, but despite himself he was trying to glance over her shoulder to get a good look at the picture. "Like I said, I'll be fine. Gifts, no gifts..." he trailed off.

Then: "You going to do fine for yourself?"

Dinah was about to give him a flippant answer, then stopped to think. "You know? I think I am." She smiled, angling the phone without looking like she meant to. "Once I get past the homesickness for here, and missing people... college and crimefighting in New Gotham sound like they're going to be a pretty awesome combo."

Hang-gliding off the Clocktower might still have to happen, though.

"Sounds cool."

Look, he'd never been a guy of a lot of words, here, but he was trying... something?

"I mean. Sounds like you'd be good at it. Beating up criminals, that kind of thing."

"Thanks." She grinned at him. "Like you're good at the underground resistance thing. I know I got freaked out about it, when I first heard, but... Seeing you there, it was pretty obvious. So don't let anyone tell you otherwise." Dinah paused. "If they do, they're snorting motor oil."

...no. Not thinking of anyone in particular. Really!

He leaned back a little now that he'd gotten a good look at the picture, and wobbled on his toes. Just... slightly. "I'll make sure they get the message," Jak said, eventually. There was a slight hint of promise in his tone for real, yeah.

"Cool." And it was. Still just that tiniest bit off-balance, but-- cool. Dinah turned for the door, then stopped, not wanting to crowd him with a hug he couldn't accept, or make him worry about her touching him. "I'd hug you," she explained. "But, you know. Awkward."

"Things have been pretty awkward," he agreed, and look, he was rubbing the back of his head again. "Um..."

"Um?" Dinah bit her lower lip, then stepped toward him. "But I'm game if you are, and my shields are good enough now that you shouldn't worry, and--"

Hug.

Woah.

Arm-full of blonde chick, as it turned out, was still kind of nice in a really weird way.

Not that Jak was terribly good at hugging back, but he made an attempt, at least. "It's been nice," he said, a little awkwardly, but at least genuinely.

"It was. Better than nice," Dinah said, squeezing him a little, relieved that this was possible now. She grinned up at him. "No matter what. Friends." Another squeeze, then she stepped back, smiling. "You were a really great first more-than-friend, Jak. Call me sometimes. I'm going to be texting you silliness anyway."
