Given that the Loveless manga is still very much in progress and not much is currently known about this character, my portrayal of him will be largely based on speculation rather than fact. If you have a different interpretation of the character or have any suggestions or concerns with my portrayal of him, please feel free to let me know ( Read more... )

And Manga Fox is full of bad unofficial translations. Japanese doesn't have gender-based pronouns, so the translators are having to guess because you can't work around that in English. (Previous chapters and translations from different people switch his gender back and forth.) Given that the last kanji in Yurio's name is "man" (and there are three kanji, his name is not Yuri), that his face and hands are more similar to the way Kouga Yun draws male characters, and that we haven't been shown any distinctly female body parts, I'm placing my money on Yurio's being male. If it ends up officially being revealed otherwise, I'll work with that, but for now, the situation is sort of like that with Crona from Soul Eater.

As the admin and scanlator of Shoku-dan (which scanlates Loveless), I'm going to have to say you're wrong here.

No one EVER uses gender-pronouns to refer to Yurio. Yuri calls him/herself Yuri-sama, and others refer to Yuri as "あの人" or "that person." Sometimes "アイツ" is also used, but it can mean "he/she/guy" etc.

So, despite Yuri's feminine appearance, Yuri does NOT have a definite gender. Calling Yuri a "she" or even "he" is guesswork, and if gender is ever stated in scanlations it is a mistake. Giving Yuri a gender makes things easier for the readers, but it has NEVER been confirmed whether Yuri is male or female.

So, the mun is free to decide whatever gender they want. For all we know, Yuri could be a hermaphrodite.
