Almost everything wrong with the church can be summed up in this Facebook status by a teenage girl... "for 30 hours starting march 5th i will go without food, to raise awareness about world hunger and poverty. my church is sponsoring the event and we will be having lots of fun bowling and having lock-ins ( Read more... )

I think... and I could be wrong here... but I think that this particular fasting is supposed to raise awareness of the person doing the fasting. Like, "Oh my... THIS is what it's like to go hungry". Only, if you want the kids to actually GET it, you need to not give them a hundred "fun" things to occupy their mind so that they don't FOCUS on the hunger... which SHOULD be what happens. But not in today's contemporary youth group. "If we want the kids to fast, we need to give them a reason... let's BOWL!"

I understand. You're hungry? Good, get your Bible out and do as the verse says in Joshua and meditate on the Word and eat from that...eat the scroll. :)

Maybe it's that whole when you fast, don't pour ashes on your head and have a scowl on your face thing that bothers me about it...or rather, don't go throw a party and give them something to do other than focusing on God. LOL! I get your frustration.

Our high school did the 30 hour famine when I was there. It started as a lunch thing that anyone who wanted could participate in - you paid $1-2 for lunch and pulled a number, then you were assigned to one of three groups - about 75-80% got just a scoop of rice, another 10ish% got rice and beans, and the remainder got a BIG meal (like roast beef, all the trimmings, etc) - a way to show what the real global way looks like ( ... )

"what some churches are becoming."

seriously? this is the kind of youth group thing that has been STANDARD for years. would i like to see it change? yes. but is it new? absolutely not.

I think the bible belt may have held out a bit longer in the youth group department. Not all churches, but all the Baptist ones I've been a part of. The "cool" thing just got to us about three years ago and is progressively getting worse. :(
