Last night at worship practice, we were going over vocals for this one song. The new baritone came over and asked me if I was hitting the tonic. I told him I didn't drink.
That's right...tonic IS the mixer part of the drink! I've never heard anyone refer to it in any other context....except the old time comedians.... ..vaudeville style you know :)
Well, let me see if I can recall enough to explain. The tonic is the root note. Once you know the root note (which doesn't mean it's the melody), then the rest of the harmonies can be figured out. So, if I were singing the tonic, then the baritone would try to avoid it. That way, we wouldn't be hitting each other's notes... or... something. :D
