Genki I + II coursebook, workbook + audio tracksI don't know the other textbooks out there. I've looked at "Japanese for Busy People", and while it's popular, my heart is with Genki. From what I've heard, it's the best in its pacing. Instead of learning to talk like a 60 year old woman, and then learning to simplify, it's very quick to teach

ooooooo *o* this looks quite helpful XD i've looked at my cousin's "Japanese For Busy People", but it was kinda ehh. and it did look like mostly really formal Japanese, soo... :3 yay for simple Japanese first ^^

Well, it's not simple Japanese first, because you need to learn the basics of formal Japanese to understand what to drop and what can't be dropped. But even in the first book, you learn about te form and it's quick to say where casual alternatives are to saying things.
