post-summary reevaluation (Furuba 114)

Yes, I'm obsessing over this chapter. Is anyone surprised?

Assuming all of the volumes are going to continue to be six chapters (except vol. 9), this starts volume 20. Is it really going to be only three or five more total? ;_; Once again, things are rushing together . . .

I'm thoroughly taken with the idea of Rin being an artist. I actually missed that the sketch was hers on the first pass over the scans--I was interpreting it as one of Takaya's flashes of information that doesn't get explained for ages.

Shadow's explanation of what's going on when Rin lashes out at Kagura includes her asking if Kagura thinks she's 'great enough to hit somebody' [paraphrased]. The immediate reaction seems like protectiveness of Tohru, but she really does *freak*--her eyes are pretty insane right at the end, and I think it's *that* that Kagura actually responds to, that makes Kagura hold her and apologize. (Esp. since Kagura later tells Kazuma she doesn't have to apologize to Tohru, that she apologized to Rin because it was a different thing.) I'm thinking that what Rin went through with her parents has left her with some very sensitive emotional triggers about violence--stronger people toward weaker, or as a way of forcing people to do anything . . . Kagura doesn't seem to think before she acts sometimes, but she really does care about not hurting people, hence the instant remorse when she realized what she'd done.

Interesting that being confined herself doesn't seem to have given Rin any bonus sympathy points toward Kyo's fate.

And also, it's interesting that Rin and Tohru's reasons for wanting to break the curse are actually pretty similar. There's the stark difference of Rin being trapped within the bond herself, while Tohru is an outsider (probably one forever; I suspect that even if the bond itself is broken, the living 12shi will stay connected to each other in some less-mystical ways. They're never going to be "normal". Losing their animal shapes presumably won't take away their memory of them, or their deep conditioning about physical contact and secrecy . . . ). Rin's always been pretty upfront about only wanting to break the curse for Haru's freedom, while Tohru's always given the impression of having a less selfish, wider focus. So the parallel of them both being desperate for their love's sake and everyone else's freedom being secondary . . . yeah. Interesting.

And I'm in the camp that assumes Tohru's actually going to confess to Kyo next chapter, assuming Takaya doesn't cut away to something else.
