email weirdness, manga happiness [Fruits Basket vol. 10]

Jun 22, 2005 22:19

For some reason, the ML's mail has been really erratic about getting to my inbox--several hours off. Weird. Other email seems to be ok . . . except for LJ comment notifications. Make that "very weird".

Did indeed find Furuba 10 at the comic store. (Shayla, Wilkie's had at least one other copy when I was there.) ( I like just about everything about this volume (non-specific spoilers for later volumes) )

fruits basket: tokyopop's release, fruits basket

The two typos that spring to mind (they may be it, I don't remember) are 'Mayu' being spelled 'Maya' once, and a use of 'to' when they wanted 'too'. Sadly, at least among the manga I read, that's not too bad. -_- Viz's X translation makes me want to get their copy editors fired.

Last week I received my French copies of volumes 10-13 (because I was sick of waiting for Tokyopop). Although I was very in the running on 10 (10-11 are my favorites in the series), I was surprised at some of the things I hadn't noticed before. (As for Hatori Mayuko, you're right, I actually skipped right over that story after the first couple pages... I love the pairing but I knew there weren't going to be further levels of understanding on that one). One of the reasons I enjoy the French versions is because although they translate somethings OFF, they'll also take other moments and really expand upon them in a helpful way. Also, the "bavardages" columns on minor characters, w00t! Those really filled me in on stuff I was wondering about for a long time. Would you be interested in me translating any of them and putting them up in my journal? When my houseguest leaves, I'll be able to take some time and really get into that ^_^

Tokyopop did translate the sidebars on minor characters in this volume, so there isn't an urgent need for translation, but I do always like to compare interpretations . . . ^_^

With what kinds of things are the French translations 'off'? It's interesting comparing some of the Tokyopop phrasings to the way fan translators have interpreted things . . . (Still frustrated over some of the differences in vol. 8. Grr.)

*cries* It's too early to be up. Gaaaah. *rubs eyes*

One other thing I noticed was that the final page of the Mayu/Hatori story seems to be told in a sort of 'future reminisce' type style, indicating Mayu was narrating a story about this from many years on.

Yeah, it's an interesting touch. I'm not sure I've known her to use that technique before (but I checked, and Shadow's translation has the same effect, so it's not Tokyopop being weird on us). ^^

I can't wait until I can get volume 10. ^^ Kisa on the cover! And lots of Hiro/Kisa squish. And Rin, right? ^^

Really not much Rin--she's only seen walking past a window, and in Hiro's thoughts. :( (But the inside front image is that one of her with Tohru, so that's nice. ^^) Next volume she's around a lot.

*sobs* I'd be squeeing over mine if it wasn't for the foul-up by Tokyopop. *stabs them many times*

I look forward to reading the Hatori story. I luff him!

Oh, and of course, more Rin!!
