Sunday morning mishmash & thoughts on owning/culling books

--I'm clinging to the idea that it's still summer--and the predicted highs between today and Thursday (27°-29°C) help a lot with that!--but there's been a chill nipping at me while I worked on falling asleep for the last couple of nights. The time of going to bed in tank tops (or at least the time of doing so without tossing a t-shirt near the bed ( Read more... )

I think there were only one or two nights this summer that I fell asleep with only a sheet over me; the rest of the season I've had at least a comforter as well (and often the comforter was joined with a heavy afghan or a fleece blanket or both). It has been a relatively cool summer (other than this first week of September, amusingly), but I've always had a hard time falling asleep without the weight of blankets: it needs to be hot enough that the air itself feels "heavy." (as a kid I had this (completely unfounded) fear of monsters in the dark that could "get" any part of me that was sticking out above my covers, so I slept with only my face peeking out, never any arms or toes. I think I never entirely got over that fear/discomfort ( ... )

Yeah, I always need some sort of covers to sleep, even if it's only a sheet. They don't feel heavy enough, usually, so I'm more likely to use a sheet and a light blanket and just try to keep the blanket only vaguely on me. ^^;

Those are good points about other reasons to hang on to some books. I don't know if I'm likely to keep much manga around for lending out, realistically, because I don't know many people locally who read it much (although who knows if/when I'll do another culling pass on it), but I definitely won't get rid of any culled books until I've made sure the friends who frequently borrow novels from me have had a chance to read them.

I have a hard time getting rid of books. I did have to eventually since I needed money and I sold some to the local used bookstore, but I still have shelves overflowing with them... 😐

I've never had much luck actually getting a significant amount of money from used bookstores, but I haven't tried in several years now. Usually I wind up just donating them someplace.

Well, I was particularly desperate for money, so I took whatever they'd give me.

I finally learned to be able to shed books by donating them to a library, either a public one or a university one, depending on the books.

Most public libraries will either add them to their collection or sell them in an annual sale where they will be purchased by book enthusiasts and the money raised will go to buying more books for the library.

Our library system often isn't the best candidate, because they generally only accept donations of books published within the past five years. (Although if I get into the habit of pruning newish books once I've read them, that would obviously change!) Not that I object to books going to the library book sale, which is what would happen to any I gave them that didn't meet their criteria. But that doesn't appeal as much to me, for some reason. :/
