Haven, Hannibal, other people's fannishness, and a few links

If you watch Haven, and particularly if you're fannish about it to whatever degree, when did it suck you in fully? I've made it as far as 1x08 and have warmed up to it some--definitely enough to keep going--but so far it's not grabbing me. And with a lot of things I enjoy that other people are fannish about, I can see where the fannishness is ( ( Read more... )

I can't remember just when Haven got me, but while I like the characters, I'm mostly invested in the mythology and the gothicness, and the mysteries about Audrey's identity and true nature.

I'm definitely interested to see what they do with Audrey's past! So far essentially all I've gotten has been "she doesn't know where she came from, there's an old photo of a woman who looks just like her, and a few people have implied that they know more than they're letting on but haven't said why they won't just TELL her much of anything". I'll be glad to see them dig into it more.

I think in season 1, they hadn't quite settled yet on who knew what, or if people actually lost some of their memories between The Troubles, not to mention just where they were going with The Troubles and Audrey, and so it's somewhat uneven in those regards, but they figure things out and Audrey's search for her past and learning about who and what she is to Haven are pretty much the core of the show.

I think it was the last ep of the season that really got things going for me, actually.

I have not seen any of Haven, but, if I remember correctly, southern Nova Scotia does indeed look very much like Maine. In fact, I thought that Cape Breton Island did, too, so perhaps all of NS looks a lot like Maine. :)

I have yet to see episode 4 of Hannibal, but IIRC, it was due to air directly after the Sandy Hook school shooting, and due to the subject matter (which I don't know what it was; I think I heard "children killing other children"?) it was deemed inappropriate. I'm not sure when I fell into the Hannibal fandom, honestly. I do know that during the first few episodes, I kept saying, "Why am I watching this?" because it was so dark and gory. At that point, I was finding the characters fascinating, but not appealing at all. And then, all of a sudden, I developed this really strong affection for Will, and then Alana, and some of the others followed. I don't feel affection for Hannibal, but I do find him fascinating to watch, and I find his complexity and brilliance to be sort of awesome in their awfulness.

It seems possible! *g*

Yeah, ep. 4 involved kids/young teenagers killing at least some kids, IIRC. I didn't find it any more upsetting than the earlier episodes. I think the one that got me the worst was the earlier one (ep. 3?) where the killer was planting people.

I'd say I find most of the characters very interesting, and I have a huge soft spot for Will, and somewhat for Alana. Hannibal himself is fascinating. (I read somewhere that the actor is playing him essentially as the devil--fascinated by and even feeling affection for humanity, but delighting in messing with them. [Wildly paraphrased.]) But I don't feel remotely fannish about it at this point, much as I can see why so many people do.
