Stuff, stuff, and parentheses abuse. (Specifically: a postal strike, a new desk, baking & BBQ...)

Huh. No wonder I feel like I haven't posted in forever--it's been almost two weeks. ^^; Stuff has happened! Among other things, Ginny's been visiting since Friday (by which I mean 2 AM on Saturday, since her flight went through Ottawa, where there were bad thunderstorms. >.<), so I opted not to work at Casual Job this week. (I was offered four ( Read more... )

Rurouni Kenshin is a jidai-geki. It's pretty much screaming to be made into a live action movie. A lot of the most popular Japanese TV series are stuff exactly like Rurouni Kenshin, and they even have multiple theme parks dedicated to jidai-geki filming. So we really don't see any reason to be afraid.

I guess I'm mainly concerned because the antagonists tend to be more over-the-top than tends to go well in live-action stuff (design-wise, not personality-wise; I have great faith in actors' ability to go big or go home). And I know that can quite easily be changed, but that's some of what's fun about Kenshin.

I do like that the actor is a fan, though. ^_^ That's always a good start. And I'm always happy to discover that something is better than I expected.

How so? (It's been a while since we've seen Kenshin, so forgive us if it's obvious.)

It's been a long time since I read or watched the series, so I don't remember a lot of details, but off the top of my head there's the thing where Shishio is horribly burned and has all sorts of fire attacks, and the guy from the Oniwabanshu who breathes fire, and a really thin guy who flies using explosives. Oh, and a guy with really, really long arms.

It's not anywhere as extreme as the character designs/techniques in something like Trigun, but it just seems like some of the characters would be hard to do well in a live-action version. *shrugs* But I could be wrong, and I'd be totally okay with that. I'd certainly like it to be a great movie!

The Canada Post thing makes me sad, especially because I was enjoying watching the NDP do their filibuster thing. I take it all as a bad omen for workers' rights under what will soon be three levels of neo-con government.

I still look forward to the Trigun movie. Is it torrentable, do you think?

Love forever for shiroiko's post.

And I am desperately trying to stay out of X-Men fandom and failing miserably. So far the results have been me torrenting a bunch of comics and possibly making suggestions on friends' plotbunnies, but I so cannot afford to get genuinely fannish right now when I have my own all-engrossing project.

The filibuster was pretty awesome (except it traumatized me on Hansard's behalf). The legislation is...yeah. What you said. :/

I don't know about the Trigun movie's availability--I haven't looked.

On the X-Men front, I figure I'll count it a win as long as I manage not to go to my parents' place to unearth my comics. >.> Except I have my trade paperbacks here. And the first two movies. Yikes.

Por-tal! Por-tal! Por-tal! ;)

Sounds like you and Chris had a great meal for his birthday. Send him a belated birthday wish from us! :D

(Also, I'm curious about the cake recipes and how they differ. ^^)

I have, much to my chagrin, fallen pretty hard into the First Class fandom... just saw the movie a second time last night. What is this? I haven't been in a fandom since like, Naruto. I don't have time for this ;_;

And yet. If you want fic recs, I now have them. *sigh*

If you have any fic recs that aren't specifically Erik/Charles, that'd be cool. ^_^ (I've got plenty of those coming in across my friends list and Tumblr on a daily basis, which is neat, but they're not actually my main interest in the movie.)

Who is, out of curiosity?

I'm watching an Erik/Charles community so it might be a little hard to find anything else, but I'll keep an eye out.

I'm quite fond of Erik and Charles, but I'm more interested in seeing fic about the kids--partly because I just haven't seen much of it so far, but I also really liked the way the movie handled some of them.
