I definitely think Akito considers Rin a reflection of Ren. (The "long slithery black hair" comment definitely suggests so.) It would definitely explain why her abuse of Rin was so violent, not the bloody and vicious sort of way, but in the fact that Rin was seriously in danger. Even when Akito hit Kisa, I don't think Kisa was ever in danger of truly dying, but poor Rin could have hit the ground wrong and broken her neck.

In the heat of the moment, Akito seemed satisfied with tormenting Rin, but that shot of her face as Rin was lying on the ground didn't look pleased. I think it was like you said: Akito saw an opportunity and took it with her mother in mind. I honestly don't think Akito meant to hurt Rin so badly, at least physically. But that's just me, sympathizing with Akito. >.<

Poor Rin, though. She's my second favorite Souma female after Akito. XD

Akito really does have the most amazing lack of self-control. :/

I don't like her, but she's starting to fascinate me. ^^ I sympathize with her over her backstory, but I hate her for letting her upbringing (or whatever other factors may be in play) dominate her behavior to the extent that she's so abusive. She's beautifully executed; I love her as a 'character' just as much as I dislike her as a 'person', if that makes sense.

Must do some fic-work with her at some point. I'm not terribly happy with how I handled 'him' in several places in the novel.

I feel so, so bad for Rin. She does plenty of things that result in self-inflicted hurt (leaving Haru, choosing to isolate herself so thoroughly), but she just keeps on getting hurt by other people for things that really aren't her fault. ;_;

shigure is keenly perceptive aboout people feelings.
Like take for example the sly passing comment he made to Mii-chan regarding the difference in economical status between her and Rii-chan (umm i guess he noticed they hit it off pretty well)

He loves to push people button whenenver he gets an open opportunity

I don't think Rin and Gure ever slept together (gosh I hope Rin has better sense than that) ^_^

*shudders* No, I really don't think they slept together either. That would have been so disturbing. He certainly didn't take her up on it that one time, and other than that (also incredibly disturbing) weirdness I haven't seen any sign that they might have that kind of relationship . . . although now that I'm thinking about it, I can almost see Rin trying it for the sake of getting back at Akito. o_o I don't think she has any actual interest in Shigure, but she's already proved that she's willing to use her body as means to an end.

This family is seriously deranged. Which is why we all love them, I guess. ^^

I've posted my thought on my LJ about ch. 101. Mostly centering on a question that's been bugging me about Shigure and Kureno. I never got to see all the scans since I'd have to download them and I don't want to do that. I saw about half of them on altar_of_akito when toriri4ever posted them. I'd like to try and see the rest sometime if I ever get the chance.
