Fanbooks are a lot of work, no matter how much you love the source material. Whew. The second Fruits Basket fanbook is off my desk as of, oh, 12:30 this morning (I spent a painful amount of time doing my final read-through yesterday, but I find working really late preferable to doing a final read in more than one sitting). wistfuljane probably could have made a better point if she hadn't used LightvsRaito as her main example. Discussion in the comment is indeed much more interesting but not much more convincing, and I actually prefer honorifics to be kept as much as possible myself >_>.

Not the best choice, no. I just find the ongoing discussion about the use of honorifics etc. interesting in general, since I know people who feel strongly about both retaining and removing them.

yeah, it is, especially the discussion on depending on a Japanese or not setting. I guess while I prefer honorific, I just don't have strong feelings on the subject ^^ It really depends on the story whether leaving/keeping them is distracting or badly done. Can depend also of how badly the translation is aside (there were a few manga I read in French where I was very annoyed by the use of "Tu" when the character obviously should have used "Vous", for example - which is the same sort of indicating the relationship tone as honorific.

I feel quite strongly about retaining them, although I've adapted books without them when I've been asked to. (Well, mainly series I took over mid-run, when the patterns had already been established by other people. ^^;) I understand the arguments about non-Japanese not really grasping the subtleties and about so many other nuances being lost anyway, but I prefer to have/provide as much information as possible. :/ I do feel less strongly about it in stories that are obviously not in a Japanese setting, although someone made a good point about that not changing the fact that it's a Japanese story...

Yay for finishing FB fanbook. But ... 12:30 am - you had a long day :(

Yeah, I submitted the script about 14 hours after I started the read-through. But there were some breaks in there, including going out for supper for a couple of hours, so I figure it was about 11-12 hours of actual work. A long day, but not horrendous, esp. since I was working at home.

Very impressive Haru/Rin cosplay. I looked through a lot of the other cosplay pictures on the site and I must say, the attention to detail is very good!

And I am so excited about the English translation of the second fanbook I can't even begin to explain. And knowing that you had a hand in it, I know it will be of good quality.

Confession time: when Tom first posted the Alphabet of Hurricanes writeup, I said "tl;dr" and moved on. I checked it out just now. I don't like it. As an introduction to Simon Armitage, it's kind of meh. (Then again, I'm not much of a fan of poetry without music.)

I found I didn't care much about his descriptions of the actual songs, but the opening made me happy. ^^;
