This chapter's definitely more about peeling back layers and resolving things clearly than it is about subtlety. Lots of interesting stuff in here. ^^ This is all to do with the main events in the chapter--depending on what's said, may post a bit more when the Kisa and Hiro material is translated, but I may have already said everything I want to ( Read more... )

Cute mug! *^^*

I've also been wondering about how Akito handled her role as the head of the family. We don't see her acting like it very often, but there was that call she got at the beach house about needing to go back to handle Ren, which makes me think that she might have complained about it a lot, but she did do her duty as a family head. I'd like to think that though she made a mess of the Juunishi, she is capable of keeping things in some sort of order. She acts like a child a lot (or used to), but some part of her is mature enough to realize where she's been wrong all these years.

I agree with Ginny in that Kyou's mother tried as hard as she could to cope with all the stress put on her. I never liked to hear his mom villianized because I did believe that the poor woman tried her hardest, and learning now of the stuff that was heaped onto her shoulders just made me feel so much sadder about what happened to her.

*nods* And she also does go out and meet with people, like the time she saw Shigure and Mit-chan at the restaurant . . . so I think she's been at least going through the motions rather than hiding away and letting things happen without her (then again, given her controlling habits, I guess it's not surprising that they extend beyond the bond).

Now the million dollar question is: was Kyo's dad always such a complete jerk?

I'm wondering if he was this vicious about how Kyo [and by extension Kyo's mother] ruined his life before the suicide, or was it a quieter discontent/anger than flared up after she died, to protect himself from any sense of guilt?)There are a few things I don't understand about that guy. I seem to remember that when he confronted Kazuma, he mentioned that Kazuma had been set for life because raising a zodiac meant being very well-provided for by the Sohma's. Most of the parents seem to be content to just take the money, but he feels a physical/mental dislike/rejection toward his son that wants to see him punished. Now, if not all of the Sohma's know who's cursed and who isn't (is this correct? I'm thinking about people like Kana, for instance), I don't really understand why his shame should be so great that he would not be content to just take the money they give him for raising Kyo and keep up the pretense like most of the other parents have done (except for Rin's parents). Does any of this make any sense ( ... )

I suspect that Kyo's dad isn't able to maintain any kind of pretense because on some level he must know that he's partially to blame for his wife's suicide, and keeping Kyo around in any capacity would probably interfere with his ability to blame him so completely (esp. since he always falls back on the "monster" thing). It definitely does look like he was hostile from the start, and what he says to Kyo backs it up--esp. if we assume from what he says that he wasn't quiet about telling his wife that her giving birth to Kyo was part of what had "ruined his life" or his reputation or what have you ( ... )

I get the impression that Kyou's Father probably acted in a similar fashion to Momiji's Mother. Kyou being born cursed and with the cat no less probably sent him off the deep end. And the fact that Kyou's Mother was still protective of her son most likely made him disgusted and jealous of Kyou. The poor woman tried her best to shield her son but her own husband was among the people she tried to protect her son against. It's like damned if you do, damned if you don't. Of course considering I deal with several family members who have mental illnesses I probably just applying too much real life experience to the situation. ^^;
