Trad Goth 101

Dec 18, 2008 12:30

Now this one may get a few posts.....I was thinking of doing a Goth intro CD....The top 20 tracks that you should really know...No more than two songs per band, basically the big hits, the ultimate in Goth spotting in rock clubs kind of thing - Initially aiming for Trad Goth:

I'd swap the Cure "Love Cats" for something else, ideally from Disintegration. I've heard a lot of self confessed goths say Love Cats is too pop. But then again I love the track myself, but I have never been goth enough.

It seems to be one of those tracks that a lot of uber-cure fans hate, but everyone else loves....No it probably isn't the gothiest track, but it is still highly played.

I like Pictures of You, but Lovesong or Lullaby probably get played more....I guess part of the issue here is i'm not a huge cure fan !

AS long as there is a Cure track in there I guess you are covered. They are definitely a band of the genre.

I may just be showing that I'm ancient here :-)
NMA - Vagabonds
The Damned - Eloise

I guess Vagabonds over 51st state is posible....It was a deliberation anyway over those.

Do you really think Eloise gets played more....I know it was thier No.1 and such is often the track everyone remembers, but I'd expect to hear Grimly Fiendish at a club more.....The others would be neat, neat, neat and smash it up, though both of those are punk. Shadow of Love is another great goth track, but i thought less well known.

Agewise i dunno if your younger/older but there can't be that much in it ???

I'm 29 in programer's years :->
I think I'd vote for Moonchild too, but I'd keep Hot Rod in for the Ministry choice.

Your probably right on Stigmata having a second listen....I like Hot Rod, but yep, i think Stigmata is more played.

Moonchild by the nephs - Ok...Thats posible, however you've lost 3 tracks there !!!

Not sure that Ministry is trad goth... I would move them to Vol 2.0 : Intro to Industrial

Hmmm...I wasn't a 100% sure either....guess that would leave space for Moonchild !

For my money, if you want to give anyone a goth 101, just hand them a copy of:
http://www.amazon.com/Nocturnal-V/dp/B000024ZZ7

This was also a cracking compilation:

Interesting you have the Smiths up there though, I don't class them as goth really despite my undying love for them :)
This is really interesting to read what other people consider to be goth .
