Why are there so many "-pool" place names? Does just mean... a pool?

basically? It's a corruption of the old celtic word bol/pol which means "people who live near a small body of water" - and the old English Pool, meaning near a pool or creek

So like Hartlepool: Comes from Hart- meaning Stag, and Pool
