I wouldn't want to wake up to the backlash to this tomorrow :(

David Laws, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, claimed up to £950 a month for eight years to rent rooms in two properties owned by his partner. The claims could be against parliamentary rules governing MPs’ second home expenses.

Last night, Mr Laws apologised and announced that he would “immediately” pay back tens of thousands ( Read more... )

I know, bless him. I think we can all understand the difficulty of his decision and I hope he comes out of it without too much pain. We'll just have to see how 'new' this new politics is. Reporting himself to the commission "immediately" will go someway to helping his case though.

Ouch. D: Couldn't have come at a worse time either. (Then again, is there ever a good time for more expenses scandal?)

It could have come before the election. That would have been a bad time. If it had happened then, he would have probably had to resign; now, he might survive it, IDK.

Yeah, I think he might, the personal angle will help. It's just going to make the govt look stupid. (Or, if you read The Mirror, more stupid.)

Well, they did say they were trying to cut red tape. Can having loopholes founded in what could be a form of inequality be regarded as the mess from red tape?

I don't think I made much sense there, but I was trying.

Ugh expenses :I
Reminds me of George's gaffe: "...and they will continue to be irresponsible."

I think it's more than expenses here. He was maybe stretching the definitions a little bit, but it was in the name of privacy and security...? IDK *shrug*

Ah, I meant the whole situation in general, not specifically Tiny David Laws!

I don't know. We all know what Nick's going to be like, and it probably is the "best" party for this to happen to (discuss), but I think so far (even though we do have so little to go on) the new coalition govt has been very mature and I can't believe they'd stop that brand new attitude so soon. Especially when it's not so clear cut whether he ever did the wrong thing for the wrong reason... The commission will find out, and until them he's just got to try to keep on.

/apparently I'm protective of David Laws. Who knew.

I fully expect the coalition to back him, but to rightly want to deal with the expenses ASAP.
I hate that he had to keep his sexuality secret, I pray that the populace *looking at you Daily Fail readers* accepts this.

However, it's rather stupid when you have ££££ to claim money WHILST trying to keep the relationship secret.

Good luck DL, LOLitics <333 you.
I hope you stay in your job & do us proud.

tl;dr I know !

I think that would be the best way to work with it. It's not the best start to the coalition, but it's not the worst one either. He's revealed that he made a mistake, but that he will fully make up for it. It's not the worst mistake to make either, since it seems wound up in privacy and security and his own personal life.

You mean, it was stupid to be doing something so dangerous when he had a secret to keep? Yeah, that is a bit stupid.

LOLITICSERS will be there for you DL! <3
