Big Bang Epic Pimp Post : The Group (part 1)

Basics

Personal-story time!
I never really loved a band before. I had bands I liked a lot, but in general I was never really into music. I lived through the American boyband era in the late 90's, and thought them horrible. I would never have thought that myself, a cynical adult in her mid-twenties, would have fallen so hard for a boyband, but I did. In mid January, 2008 I discovered Big Bang, and my life hasn't been the same since. I hate to be one of those fangirls who waxes poetic over their idols, but I'm afraid it's unavoidable. It's so weird and amazing, from my own perspective, that a band was able to turn me completely around (believe me, I'm more the type of person who questions the life choices of people who live and breathe for a band). I don't know how it happened, but here I am, a little over a year later, with Big Bang such a huge part of my life that it's hard to remember when they weren't. In the 14 months since I've discovered Big Bang I've been to Korea twice to see them in concert, I've collected all of their albums and DVDs (which believe me, is a feat), I have so many Big Bang goods it's ridiculous. How I got here, I don't know, but I'm loving it!

Long story short: Big Bang changed my life forever, and I wouldn't have it any other way! There's so much I could say about Big Bang, and yet I feel inadequate whenever I try to describe them. All I know is they're amazing. Utterly and truly.

(Be warned, there's a LOT of pictures in this post, so it might take a bit to load)

Basic Info
Big Bang is a five member group from South Korea. Their musical style is kind of a blend of hip hop, r&b, pop, dance, and electronica. They are managed to YG Entertainment, and officially debuted in 2006 with their first single album "Bigbang". Prior to their debut they were involved in a documentary about the formation of the group, which aired from July to August 2006. While they obtained some success with their early releases, it wasn't until they released "Lies" that they became a huge sensation. In 2009 they sought international success by promoting themselves in Japan to outstanding results. In 2010 YGE announced that this year there will be solo releases from Young Bae, Dae, and TOP in addition to a new Big Bang album. Essentially things are looking amazing for Big Bang, and all us VIPs!

The Members! Left to right: Dae Sung, G-Dragon, Seung Ri, TOP, Tae Yang

For future reference, I generally call the boys the following names:
Dae Sung = Dae
G-Dragon - GD
Seung Ri = Baby
TOP = TOP (yeah, not real creative there)
Tae Yang = YB, or Young Bae

Random Facts!
- Big Bang originally had a 6th member, SO-1. He was cut by Yang Hyun Suk during the Big Bang documentary because he "lacked stage presence and was too shy" (Baby was also cut, but impressed YG with his dancing and improved singing, and was brought back into the group). SO-1 continued as a trainee in YGE for several years, before he left for Cube Entertainment. SO-1 (he goes by his real name Hyun Seung now) is currently a member of Beast.
- Prior to the release of "Always", no group had released a mini album before. "Always", and the mini album format were such a huge success that many other groups in Korea started releasing mini albums.
- All the members of Big Bang get along well (although they were awkward with each other in the past, especially Dae and Baby), and are complete and utter adorable dorks. They're spazzes, and believe me, when you see the gifs and videos, you'll understand! Not only that, but they're really sweet, just general all around amazing guys.
- Big Bang were the first artists that Seo Taiji let sample one of his songs. Since Seo Taiji has such a strict policy on his music, it's amazing that Big Bang was able to gain permission to sample "환상 속의 그 (The Person In A Fantasy)" for their song "Crazy Dog". I'm glad they did though, since Crazy Dog is one of my favorite songs! Either way, they probably got a little help from YG, since he was a member of Seo Taiji and the Boys.
- The official Big Bang fanclub is named V.I.P, named for Big Bang's second single album "Big Bang is V.I.P". There are three official V.I.P fanclubs (there is also the Japanese V.I.P fanclub) all with different requirements for entry. I believe registration is currently closed for VIP3. Despite having a huge international fanbase, the official fanclub is not open to foreigners (with the exception of the Japanese fanclub), as you need to have a Korean social security number to join.
- Big Bang performed in the YG Family World Tour in 2006. During this tour they traveled to Japan, as well as to the USA.
- Big Bang also was present at the 2007 Korean Music Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles California.
- They never lip-sync. As an American (and thus used to lip-syncing in music) I find this amazing. They do have a backtrack, but they never pretend to sing along to it. They rely on the backtrack more in performances that are more dance heavy, but in general they sing most of the time. As far as I know, they've only lip-synced on two occasions. The first time was during the MBC Music Core Special Stage in 2007, when the choreography was too difficult to dance and sing simultaneously. The second time, if I remember correctly, was right after TOP went to the hospital. In both instances you can tell they're lip-syncing, they're pretty bad at it, because THEY NEVER DO IT. And there's no reason to, their voices are amazing!
- Big Bang has been instrumental in some of the recent fashion trends in Korea. From their earlier street style, to their more recent more haute couture style, they have some of the most influential style in Kpop today.
- The group was involved in the Korean online game called "Sudden Attack". They were made into characters, and provided voices for the characters.
- There is a cartoon version of Big Bang called The Bangs. There is a comic for the Bangs, as well as a lot of Bangs related merchandise (from board games to socks).
- Big Bang got into the cosmetic business, with the release of the BBbud line, which featured skin creme, toner, cleanser, lip gloss, and a perfume.
- In early 2009, Big Bang released their book "Shouting Out To The World!", which tells the story of the journey to success, and ultimately how they went about achieving their goals. This book later spawned a stage musical, "Shouting". Unfortunately the book has only been released in Korean, therefore I am unable to read it.
- Right before they debuted, YG gifted the boys with custom pendant he has designed for each ot them. GD's pendant is a star with a baseball cap on it, with the meaning "to become a big star in the music industry". Young Bae's pendant is a "YB" with a crown over it, meaning "to become the best in the music industry". TOP's pendant is a hand holding a megaphone, meaning "to inspire people with his voice". Dae's pendant is an image of the earth in between headphones, meaning "to let the whole world listen to your music". Lastly, Baby's pendant is a flag with a "V" on it, on a disc, with a ring surrounding it (kinda like an image of a flag on Saturn), meaning "a new style of music set on the music industry". I couldn't find any pictures of them, so I scanned my "Want You" Tour gold sticker things (they don't look like it, but they're 24k gold, an awesome rare find I scored in Japan), so you can at least get an idea of what they look like. Anyway, you can see them here.
- Unlike a lot of other idol groups, Big Bang has a wide variety of fans, because their music is so diverse. At the concerts I've seen plenty of male fans, as well as older fans (the older fans make me feel better, since I'm in the mid twenties, and not the typical teen-aged fangirl).
- Big Bang has advertised for many different things. Here are most, if not all of them!

- Big Bang have released 19 albums total (not including solo albums), 5 concert DVDs (with three more to be released very soon), 5 books, and a ton of merchandise. All of this after being active for only 3 and a half years.
