Thumb of Pestilence

I don’t exactly have a green thumb. It may even be the Thumb of Pestilence, since my yard is home to a half dozen rotted tree stumps full of creepy crawlies that look suspiciously like termites, an occasional black widow spider, several legions of fire ants, and loads of poison ivy. On two occasions over a year apart, I ran over a Copperhead snake ( Read more... )

That all sounds very familiar. My yard is qi free at the moment (and has been for the last four years), too, and I scuttle around trying to escape neighborly recrimination. I do not like touching dirt. It skeeves me out. (Not as much as newsprint, but that's another story.) However, the bullet has been bitten, and we're getting soil dumped in the depression in the yard on Saturday and are fencing the whole thing in as a start. I'll do a little pedestrian vegetable growing this year, because if I have dirt, I may as well have tomatoes. It's just so not my thing. My thing is being indoors, in the cool darkness.

I love that you feel inspired!

I think of them as fussy perfectionists, the kind of people who are constantly waging war against the inevitable victors, like dandelions and Japanese beetles. People passionate about gardening are hyper-vigilant control freaks.

Whaddaya trying to say, there? ;)

Why else would someone spend their weekends pawing through the dirt to pull up a plant that they didn’t put there?

:: laughing hysterically :: I love the way you see the world.

You're graduating in three days? That is excellent news, congratulations!

I feel similarly about getting too closely involved with the dirt. It destroys my manicure just about every time, and that's with the gardening gloves on. However, this year I have this amazing person mowing my lawn who is all meticulous and tidy about it. It makes me feel inspired to plant something, or something. If only I could feel assured that I will continue to be inspired to take care of that stuff later.

"...He left me with a list that will take the better part of summer to complete..."
