Does being in UROP mean you're more likely to do research? Do students NOT involved in UROP have the opportunity to do research?

I believe that all undergrads have the opportunity to do research (at least in BioSci) through Bio199. Doing research with a program however you might have a better change of getting into a lab. Bio199 is competitive though I couldn't tell you how competitive.

You don't have to do UROP to do research. I"m in research right now and I'm not doing UROP or excellence. its really just a choice. If you do UROP you have to do a poster presentation and you can also do excellence in research ( a friend of mine decided to do both this year). You don't have to decide to do UROP unless you find that you are really passionate about it after you join the lab/research. Some labs through may require that you eventually do UROP or excellence. its better to just do your own research about the research.

UROP is a program that you actually get money from to do research. It depends on which department, but I know in the physics/astrophysics department, professors are happy to help you with any undergrad research you would like and encourage you to apply for UROP and will spend time helping you to do so if you wish. You don't have to do it to do research, but it may be that teachers are more likely to help you out if you do. I can't speak for any other departments (like Bio, which I imagine is much more competitive) but generally speaking, in the physics dept., the teachers are really happy when you express interest in undergrad research.
