second chance?

Dec 18, 2012 11:10

I did really badly my first quarter, and because of it, I'm going to be subject to academic disqualification. Before I go on any further, I would like to say that I've attended all of my classes except for when I'm extremely sick (like about to throw up sick) and did the work I was supposed to do. I don't go out partying or anything. I think my ( Read more... )

They will give you lots of chances and warnings before they actually kick you out. Just keep trying hard and don't let your GPA drop and I think you'll be fine. Try to find study groups with other students and go to office hours as much as possible. Make friends with your profs and they won't want to fail you :)

Unfortunately, UCD is nothing like community, technical, or vocational college. Showing up and turning in the work often isn't enough for an A. If there are concepts you don't understand or if you need help with writing, see if anyone in the Learning Skills Center can help you-- they're in Dutton Hall. (I think. I worked for the LSC like 6 years ago...so hopefully they haven't moved or folded since then. :p)

LSC is alive and kicking and as helpful as ever :)

I used em my sophomore and junior year for Chem and Math tutoring, and by god they helped a ton.

You'll be okay. Like jennifairy11 says, I know a fair amount of people put on academic probation that have just continued on with school. They won't kick you out, and going to advising and showing you are trying will definitely help. Likewise, if you are struggling, get help IMMEDIATELY. If you don't do well on your midterm, fix that shit before finals week. It often takes a lot more than just showing up and doing work to do well in some classes. Going to your professor/TA's OH will help a lot, going to the Learning Skills Center in Dutton will help, or using the chat site on Smartsite or talking to classmates and doing your homework together or studying together helps too. Davis has a lot of academic resources, from mentoring to advising to tutoring, all of it. Spend time researching these resources, and utilize them. You're paying for them in your tuition, might as well use em!

You will not be kicked out right away. Go meet with your adviser and discuss your plan and options for next quarter. Bring up your GPA in winter quarter and you will not be kicked out. Above all else work out a balance college life. Go meet new people, go to sports game and experience college life. At the same time be aware of your academic duties and work and study hard.

I been down your road before and know the disqualification is a shock shell. Felt that way to me.

i had a really rough first quarter when i transferred in too. i felt like i missed a few memos and had to re-adjust some old habits and ways of applying information. i would recommend going to office hours, not necessarily for help understanding the concepts (though it should definitely help) but to get a better handle also on how to approach the classes you're taking

regardless, i think you'll have a better second quarter now that you sort of know what to expect :)
