As Callie Torres-Montgomery sat in one of the plush armchairs of the hospital’s thankfully empty break room, a buzz sounded in the pocket of her lab coat. Praying that it wasn’t her beeper, she issued a sigh of relief to see that Addison was calling her.

She swiped her finger across the bottom of her iPhone to answer the call. “Perfect timing. Just got out of surgery twenty minutes ago.”

“Anything good today?” Addison asked. In the background, Callie could hear the hum of the washing machine.

“Repaired a trochanteric fracture.”

“Nice! Not a bad way to start the day.”

“Definitely not,” Callie replied, settling back into the armchair. “I’d much rather be at home with you and Lila.”

Addison sighed. “I wish you were too. You’re missing out on pretty much the best thing ever right now.”

Callie perked up, her lower lip jutting into a full pout. “What? What’s she doing?” She pictured their four-year-old daughter and felt a pang in her chest at having to work a Saturday.

“You know how your sister is always giving you a hard time by saying Lila’s barely even your daughter?”

“Yeah, the witch,” Callie grumbled. “Why?”

“Well, she’s just given bonafide proof that she’s just as much your kid as she is mine.” Addison chuckled and even through the phone, Callie could hear her smiling. It was the type of smile that only accompanied motherhood, which made Addison radiate beauty and happiness.

She squirmed. “So what’s she doing? You’re killing me here.”

“I just sent you a picture. Mind you, she dressed herself today. I had no say whatsoever in her choice of attire.”

“Gonna look. Gimme a sec.” She clicked the button on her phone that opened her email and noticed her wife’s name at the top, complete with an attachment. She impatiently waited the three seconds for it to load and, when it did, she squealed.

Lila sat in the middle of their living room, dressed in her Superman costume from the previous Halloween. She was looking towards the window, her large brown eyes wide and wondrous and thoughtful. Her little hand held a clump of her long, auburn hair, the ends of which were in her mouth.

Callie squealed again and felt her heart burst into a hundred love-filled pieces. “I’m forwarding that to Aria as soon as we’re off the phone,” Callie said, her grin stretching so wide over her face that her cheeks hurt.

“Already did,” Addison replied smugly. “Next time that b-i-t-c-h tries to say that you were nothing but an incubator for my fertilized egg for nine months, I’m going to smack her in the face.”

Callie made a cat-like sound at her wife’s sass and laughed. “Vindication is sweet.”

“She may have my genes,” Addison said, “but she is definitely a mini you.”

“That’s my girl!”

Addison laughed. “You’re off at six, right?”

“Barring no complications with my last surgery, yes.”

“Good. Lila wants us to go to Mario’s for pizza tonight.”

“You spoil her, you know,” Callie pointed out.

“I spoil both of my girls.”

Callie beamed. “I know. And I love you all the more for it.”

“Good. Lila’s waving from the living room. She’s built a fort out of pillows and couch cushions and is therefore unable to come say hi.”

“Tell her to save some room in there for me, okay?”

“Will do.”

“Thanks for the picture, Ads. That’s just the thing I needed to get through the day.”

“Anytime. Love you.”

“I love you too. Give her a kiss for me.”

“I’ll give her two.” Addison smacked a kiss into the phone. “Later, babe.”

Callie ended the call and looked again at the picture of her daughter. Despite being a physical clone of Addison, there was no way you could look at her and not see Callie. It was like looking in a mirror. Callie hugged the phone to her chest and counted down the hours until she was free to go home.
