Reality TV - Compete for a Kidney!?!

I'm trying to design a syllabus, but gorramit, this was too wtf to avoid clicking on.  I'm still processing what I think about it.  Tasteless or completely necessary in our apathetic, TV-driven world to make people realize how few organs are donated?

It's sad because it will make some TV exec a lot of money. I can only hope it makes people think of being an organ donor.

I personally can't stand Reality TV shows. I put up with enough realism in everyday life and just have not been able to stomach watching it. I think it was created out of desperation in the first place, but that is just my opinion. As for this show in particular it brings the question of just how far are these producers going to take shows in the future? Is there really a market for such a show? I'm trying to imagine being the donor and wonder how do you decide something like that? I wonder what kind of twisted reality I will wake up in tomorrow? =/

I've never watched any reality TV shows, but even so, this one boggles the mind. How to make such a decision and so publicly? It seems there's a reason such is left to medical professionals who weigh need vs. viability.

Unfortunately donating organs, especially after a tragic accident is very far from anyones mind, and it's not something a lot of people think about before hand.

While this seems a bit tasteless, it will at least get the word out somewhat.

I've actually heard people say, "They pay you to donate blood, they should pay you to donate organs," so the fact that there's now a television show in the works to reward people for donating (hence getting more people to donate) doesn't surprise me.

I agree - I think it's both tasteless and perhaps necessary. I am one of a family of organ donors, but many people aren't. The other thing is that no matter how strongly you believe in it, if something happens to you, your family can override your wishes. It's not enough to check the box on your driver's license.
