TW - Children of Earth
Above the cut, I'll say that I enjoyed the story. 5 episodes gave them enough time to tell something fairly tight and focused yet with enough room to have a story with some substance to it.
Likes:
- Gwen rocked this entire season! And the way it ended was a reminder that she was the audience's POV person/entry into TW all along.
- Great story idea; I esp like the way it didn't pull any punches when it came to the government: the way they were going to lie about absolutely everything to cover their asses. Harrowing to hear them discuss that their children couldn't be taken before moving on to deciding that it was the working class ones that would be taken.
- When the soldiers went to the council estate and started forcibly removing children from their homes, just ... guh. Really heart-wrenching. And Gwen's run was really well done, as well as her saying that the Doctor must turn away from Earth at times because he can't stand the decisions we make.
- Even with a lot of 'oh, no, Ianto!' feeling, I really liked that Jack went into Thames House (with no guns blazing - no nothing), thinking that by doing a big grandstand, it would work ... but it didn't. Much more realistic. The Doctor gets to do a lot of those, but then he's the Doctor.
- The ending being all about sacrifice, that such is what it really takes sometimes.
- Poor Jack, he can't even say he loves someone. Ianto died in his arms, and he couldn't say it. He didn't say it to his family, or even to Gwen (who it was clear he loved from earlier seasons). But I like it because it rings true for his characterization. Same for him deciding to leave Earth at the end - Jack has changed a great deal from being a sexy conman, but how far is he from that person who justs wants to run, to have no connections (esp when they hurt so much)? I don't think his character reset to when we met him through Nine and Rose, not by a long shot, but I think elements peek through.

- Well, TW got better every season, and now I imagine that this is it - it's over. There have been rumors, but the way they ended it kind of cinches things. It went out on top, but being so good right then makes me miss it even more.
I'd have to watch it again to say anything more concrete, but I'm not sure I'm in the mood to watch it again.
