“Oh, my god!” Jonathan said as the end credits rolled on another season one episode of Battlestar Galactica. “Apollo and Starbuck so want each other.”

Andrew snorted. “Dude, they’ve already had each other.”

“What?”

“Yeah, I bet that back when she was with Zack, Starbuck and Apollo went out and got all super drunk one time, and then -”

Jonathan interrupted, voice stern. “You’ve been reading fanfic again.”

Andrew crossed his arms. “So what if I have?”

“There’s nothing,” Jonathan pointed an angry finger at the TV screen, “to support that happening in canon!”

“There’s nothing to refute it either.” When Jonathan only grumbled, Andrew added, “See, you can’t disprove it.”

“But it’s crazy.”

“No, it isn’t!” A pause, then his voice dropped. “Um, why is it crazy?”

“Starbuck loved Zack.”

“It’s completely possible to love more than one person at a time.”

“And then there’s - oh, I don’t know - consistent characterization. Do you really think Apollo would do something like that to his brother?”

“But that’s just it!” Andrew clutched a hand to his chest dramatically. “He and Starbuck are soul mates, but guilt over their one night of illicit and amazingly hot sex kept him from her for years.”

Throwing up his hands, Jonathan stood, “That’s it - no more Live Journal for you.”

“But …”

But Jonathan walked away,

and then farther away, fading into grey,

and Andrew opened his eyes to the alarm clock. 3:47 am. Same as always.

Wandering into the kitchen, usually empty at this hour, he found Maria layering chucks of ciabatta bread with sun-dried tomato paste and soft fresh mozzarella.

Swinging her head so that her long dark hair uncovered her smile, she said, “Ciao, Andrew.”

“Ciao, Maria.” He opened the refrigerator door. “Good patrol?”

“Si, it took some time, but I staked three vampires at the Colosseo.” She held up her plate. “I am hungry.”

After pouring a glass of milk, he joined her at the table.

“And you? You cannot sleep?”

“No, I …” She’d always been one of the nicest Slayers in Rome, and they talked every so often, but he didn’t know how to explain the dreams, to explain ...

She reached out to pat his arm.

The silence was comfortable as she finished eating, comfortable enough that Andrew cleared his throat and started talking. “I had a friend. I didn’t really realize he was a friend at the time. I mean, I knew we liked the same stuff, Star Wars, comics, stuff like that, but …”

A pause.

“Your friend, he is no longer alive.”

“How’d you -?”

She held up a hand. “This life we live can be hard.”

He nodded.

“And you miss him.”

All the air in his lungs left in a whoosh. “Yes.” He looked down at the table, doodling in the water ring left by his glass.

A few minutes passed before Maria said in a lighter voice, “So Star Wars. I like Star Wars.”

“Really?” Andrew looked up.

“Really.” She smirked. “It is not only men who like these things.”

“Does that mean you’ve seen Battlestar Galactica?”

“Si, it is primo!”

“And what do you think of Starbuck and Apollo?”

“Their love, it is fated.”

“Exactly!”

She gave a little shrug. “But I do not think it will go well.”

“What?” Andrew’s voice hit a high squeak. “How can you say that? Don’t you see …”
