Joyce runs her hand over the tomatoes and sighs. They’re still half green and will need to be put on the kitchen windowsill for at least two days before they’ll have enough flavor for salad.
“You don’t want those,” a friendly voice announces from behind her.
“Excuse me?” She turns to see a pleasant-looking man smiling at her, brown hair gleaming under the bright fluorescent lighting, Kelly green Izod tucked into belted tan slacks.
“Helmut Farms tomatoes are never any good. You want to try Whitly’s plum ones.” He holds out a plastic bag. “Here. I’ve already picked out these and made sure they’re good. Why don’t you have them?”
She smoothes a hand over her hair. “Oh, I couldn’t.”
“Really, I insist.” He gestures towards her half-full cart and then to the small basket on his arm. “Besides, there’s no one waiting for me, and it looks as if you’re shopping for two.”
“Oh, yes, my daughter.”
His smile grows, and he places the tomatoes in her cart. “Well, she’s a very lucky young lady to have a mother who knows the importance of fresh vegetables. I hope she appreciates that.”
Laughing, Joyce plays with the end of her necklace.
He continues. “And if you’re making a salad, may I suggest adding a little fresh basil? They’ve just received a lovely batch.”
“Basil does sound good.”
“Especially with a balsamic vinaigrette.” He wends his way through shopping carts, past piles of apples and peaches, leading her to the fresh herbs.
She follows, shopping cart temporarily abandoned so that she can keep up.
Picking over the selection, he turns to her with a specific bunch of basil. “I have a recipe I could share with you, if you like. It adds in some spices and parmesan to make it more interesting.”
Joyce smiles and reaches out, brushing his hand while taking the herbs he’s chosen. “I’d like that.”
