Let's just say, he must have outlived his usefulness to the western world.... He could have been deposed at any time.

Agreed. I’m not sure what the advantage of our pursuing this course of action was. In the past few years Gadhafi bent over backwards to give the West what they wanted. Two years ago President Obama was the first American President to ever shake his hand.

The only advantage I see to the United States to this possibly winning the goodwill of the Arab World, yet they remember that handshake too. We don’t come out of this looking well. The advantage to our government though, would seem to be to distract.

Some European nations seemed more intent on his downfall than we did. Perhaps our involvement was a favor to one of them?

Or who knows, Saudi Arabia wanted Hussein deposed due to the threat he posed to everyone in the area, and yet they would never say so publicly. It could be something totally behind the scenes.

We were on a World Cruise from San Diego to Philadelphia that year and were told to swing buy. I’m not sure if it did any good, but we got a very pretty Expeditionary Medal out of it.
