How many bands were making really awesome music in 1982 (or so) and are still doing it today?

depeche mode & portion control are the only two i can think of...

These are all based on opinion, and could be hotly disputed. However, let's see. Here's a list of bands still creating relevant, interesting new music.

Depeche Mode - I do like stuff from 1981 up until today.
U2 - Likewise.
The Cure (although I'm not into their music these days)
Tom Waits
Metallica? (never was a huge fan, thought 86-91 were best years)
Prince? (haven't listened to his new music for years)
Iggy Pop? (ditto, not since 2000 or so)
David Bowie? (ditto)

Lots more technicalities. I'd narrow it down to U2 and DM for me, but again, opinions vary. I don't follow The Cure and haven't for years. I'm sure Elvis Costello is still making albums too, but I don't really care.

Tom Waits is a good one, but U2 has been pretty mediocre since achtung baby. Bowie might count too, i guess.

U2 - I thought All that you can't leave behind was one of their better albums. Not been so keen on the last two.

Bowie...hmmmm. He's gone a bit like McCartney, not bad but nothing to compare to his best stuff.

The same with The Cure and DM for me to be honest.

NIN didn't exist until 1987, though...

or release anything before 1989. not exactly 28+ year gap.
