Yesterday chassit19  and I were lucky enough to have a day off together. We try to make these special as they are intermittent at best. This one really rocked. We made a full day of the Nelson, the Liberty Memorial, and the mysterious mural near our home that we've always meant to go look at close-up but never have. She was able to take a panoramic series

I had that moment with my re-reading of Kushiel's Dart over Christmas. I think another consideration is that we both probably built it up in our minds after reading it, so that when we came back to it, it wasn't just the original writing that we were looking at, but our own memories of it.

Another thing is that I've had the whole first trilogy to get used to Phaedre's character. She's not surprising anymore and her actions aren't as nonsensical. Honestly, I didn't really start to understand her until I realized that she's a super hero with a *very* unconventional super power. That idea didn't hit me until I really started thinking about Melisande and that she is, in fact, a super villain. I can go into all sorts of detail on that if you like. Anyway, armed with knowledge I can appreciate character insights in the scenes that I overlooked the first time when I was too busy being shocked by teh pr0n.

There are still some unforgivable plot holes though. A Khusheth nobleman who did not know Phaedre existed immediately recognizes the Dart even though no one has had it in two hundred years but the Dowayne of Cereus House has never even heard of it? And it is somehow okay and something of a national pastime to openly taunt and regularly make fun of the KING'S PRIVATE ARMY OF WARRIOR-MONK NINJAS? Okay, so they're celibate.

*laughs* I kinda love your assessment here. I'll admit though, I'm the kind of person who fills in the plot holes of such stories, so I'd not even noticed the ones you've pointed out before ;)

I'll admit when I stop thinking of them as D'Angeline and start thinking of them as French everything that's ridiculous about them starts to make sense.
