Yesterday was my first day off since last Sunday and it was wonderful. I spent most of the day playing WoW and got my character a decent way into level 79. Only one more level to go! Had a great deal of fun even in spite of falling in with the worst Halls of Lightning group ever.

I was wondering if I was the only one who thought 300 was a masterpiece. It's like everyone decided to hate it once the frat boy contingent kept shouting "This is Sparta!" across college campuses. The fact is, it's a cinematic tour de force.

And agreed, Watchmen is even better. :)

The 300 hate just requires a lot of uptight leaps of logic. "OMG! It's a movie about white people fighting brown people! And the movie was made in America! They're saying America should kill brown people! And the brown people have mutant troglodytes in their army! They're saying that ALL brown people are mutant troglodytes!" Please.

Of course, I'm sure Watchmen is discriminatory too because Rorshach deep-fries a black man and furthers the stereotype that midgets should be flushed down toilets. He also thinks lesbianism is immoral. To say nothing of mass-vaporizing the Viet Cong.

What I always liked about that reading of 300 was the parallel one that says, "Hey, this is about a massive, overpowering imperialist nation discovering what a bad idea it is to invade someone else's country when the inhabitants of said country are willing to do some truly insane shit to keep the imperialists out!"

And note that I still have my 300 LJ icon, dammit.

Remember that goat-head demon that was apparently Xerxes' drug hookup? He magicked the rhinoceros in from an alternate timeline where the rhinoceros is domesticated and in common use throughout the mediteranean. It happened. Read Herodotus.

I was very happy with the girl who played Laurie. I was skeptical at first, but she was good. The guys who played Rorshach and Dan (Nite Owl II) were in a movie called Little Children, which I loved. I was happy, a few months back, to see them cast in Watchmen.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Watchmen is the best film I've seen since Serenity. I hope the rumours are true about the four-hour DVD. I'm so there.

Also, I noticed the Apocalypse Now homage :)

I didn't like 300, but not because of some historical blah blah stuff. I just don't enjoy that type of movie. I thought the special effects and the cinematography were great. The story line just isn't for me. I am not jumping up and down to see Watchmen just because I don't anticipate it being my type of movie. Again, the visual effect is cool. So was Sin City, but I didn't enjoy it either. I will admit it. I am a romantic comedy girl. I am sure that is allowed, right?
