Finally finished Sometimes a Great Notion.  I think I started reading it like...a year ago?  I'm not even sure.  It might not have been that long ago, but I'm quite certain I started it at least a month or so before we moved, so maybe Oct.?  Anyway, I'm amazed I finished it, because usually if it takes me that long to get into a book, I never reach ( Read more... )

It's odd because I just grabbed a student's Cliff Notes for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and they say he described it as a disappointment, but they don't go into any explanation as to why.

Kesey described S.A.G.N. as a disappointment? Or Cuckoo's Nest?

Sometimes a Great Notion, but, again, there wasn't any attribution or sourcing on that. It was a throwaway line in a two page bio.

Hm, very interesting. I could see him viewing its reception as a disappointment, since it wasn't exactly met with rave reviews all around when it came out. What he aimed to do in the book was definitely ambitious, but I think he succeeded on quite a few levels. Personally, I think it might have been a bit better and more focused if he had laid off the hallucinogenics a bit, but who knows? A muse is a muse...

I got that feeling of sadness that you sometimes get at the end of a great book, when you don't want it to end because you feel so invested in the characters.

I totally get it. I both hate and love this feeling. I'm glad you enjoyed the book though, it must feel like a victory of sorts to have finally gotten through it.
