Also, re: male reproductive strategy: males couldn't cheat without complicit females. Chicks lie, too. Typically far more effectively as well, as they were historically managing the background social organization and were keeping up with and working the gossip.

Arms races like deception being what they are, we lie as effectively as we need to in order to defeat the detection and counter-deception routines we've historically come across.
