A Pictorial Review of
Empire of Light

by Jill JonnesThis isn't really a book review; more of a sketch for one, but the book is really weighing me down, so I thought I'd go back to doing at least one book review a week. I'm going to keep posting a sketch a day, and hopefully a couple of finished pages of comics a week, but I need some diversion ( Read more... )

1. Dig the sketches, as usual.
2. Don't know if you've seen this site already, but it's another good source for meltdown summaries.

No, don't know the site. I've found that a combination of Krugman (who just won the Nobel) and the NPR/This American Life spin-off are my favorites. I like that Krugman has been right about everything AND now has a Nobel.

No! Tell me all about it! Did you post about it? I don't remember it at all. I've asked a few friends to explain how the Wardenclyffe Tower could have worked, but so far I still don't get it.

There's a lot of wild things in the history of the U.S. that don't get brought up enough. The golden age of electricity is one of them. I really dig the sketch of a young Edison; far too often, you only see the older photos.

Also, this reminds me of The Five Fists of Science

I still haven't read The Five Fists of Science. I like the Tesla/Twain pairing. Edison was an asshole but was still pretty cool - I wouldn't have lumped him in with the Powers That Shall Not Be Named. J.P. Morgan, on the other hand, was just evil. He was Cthulhu.

In The Five Fists of Science they mean this literally. It's awesome.

And yeah, Edison wasn't entirely evil, but he was a real asshole, especially at making sure Tesla got screwed over a lot. An electrifying an elephant.

Still dig this! You've seen Kate Beaton's Tesla comic, right?
