Troy Swain's Art Show, 2001

In 2001, I had a solo show at the Southfirst Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. After my show opened, 2001 turned into a horrible, horrible year. ¹I made action figures of six of my friends, and continued making action figures of post-Kantian philosophers. The philosophers were called "Modern Man Action Figures." Each ( Read more... )

Did you whittle these all by yourself, or were they factory produced? I know there's something about working with MacFarlane on your frontpage... Bet all your friends want you to turn them into action figures now.

Oh, I guess I should clear that up. I have to re-edit.

I made them out of Sculpey™ using dental tools. Then I made rubber molds and took hard wax casts. I added clothes and finshing details and then took silicon molds of each of the pieces. Finally, I cast the whole thing in a two-part plastic (Smooth-on brand, but I forget which plastic).

When I was seriously making art, craft was uniformly ignored. Being of a contrary nature, I went the opposite direction. In retrospect, despite my commitment to craft, I was still making conceptual art, which is what I claimed to NOT be making.

So cool. I've taken a couple years off from creating (fine) art too. I am not the type to pour all of my emotions out creatively, but I've got some ideas swirling around I might get back to soon. Do you think you'll get back into it eventually?

I'm working on stuff now, but it's very slow. I have two major projects I want to work on, and they're both going to take a year plus.

I consider my comic art, but we all know the status of that.

I have a bunch in storage. I'm posting pics of the philosopher action figures tomorrow. Most of those are gone, but I still have a few in storage. They're available, but they're all pretty roughed up, since they haven't seen daylight in two years.

So, um, hook it up.

I'm serious...I'll purchase them, who cares if they're banged up a bit....

What philosopher's?

I think they would fit in perfectly in our little abode

Cool. I'll post the others tomorrow. See what you think of them. If you want, you can come over some time.
