Per my bosses' request, I sent him an email detailing that my mother's illness has been diagnosed as terminal and that I'll be taking time off starting at the end of this month and then as needed. So email written and sent ( Read more... )

I got a week of paid vacation *ahem* *bereavement* from my grandmother's recent death...it was nice to spend that time with family.

I will get actual Funeral Days for the actual Funeral - so I'll have up to week then of paid time that won't come out of my pool.

Well, I didn't have a job to take off from when my mom died, because I was 16. Wow, who knew I got off easy?

Don't look at it as negotiating. Look at it as an early way to deal with the healing process. There are things you need to face. It sucks, but it is true.

yeah, and now that I've had a day to sorta think about it - I am much more sanguine. I think my problem was that I was expected to use a situation that I haven't really come to grips with to my advantage.

I'm still floating down the river of denial - miracle scenarios of reprieve keep popping up in my head.

Well, that's one way to look at it. But you're not actually getting an advantage. You do need to work within company policies, though, or run the risk of being replaced. It might suck, but the alternative of being unemployed is worse.
