learn the lyrics to his secret charade

// You, even when I fall

you help me up without shaking
with an unfaltering gaze

And you, during those hard times

and until the end, you hold

both of my hands and stay with me

The excitement is infectious. It spreads from one member to the other, like an irresistible itch that can’t be contained. Yoochun taps frantically at the window, waiting impatiently to be let out of the vehicle whilst singing ‘Aladdin’ songs.

Every nerve in Junsu’s body tingles. He crosses his leg and wriggles his toe pointlessly, fidgeting about. Yoochun slaps his thigh to make him stop moving, but Junsu continues. ‘I’m restless,’ he says, by way of explanation.

Yoochun nudges him again. ‘Yah, if you have nothing to do, go wake Yunho hyung,’ he says.

Junsu is easily swayed. He turns towards Yunho and grabs him by the V-neck. ‘Hyung!’ he shouts, shaking Yunho violently awake.

The leader jolts to consciousness. ‘Did I miss something?’ he coughs dumbly, looking behind at Jaejoong, who slinks backward slyly in his chair as the vehicle comes to a stop.

‘Woo~,’ the lead singer tells him. ‘We’ve reached.’

The members emerge from the van, ooh-ing and aah-ing at the magnificent castle pointing right to the sky; perfect for a day in Wonderland.

‘Disney!’ Yoochun cries, breaking into dance with the rest of them like lunatics let loose.

Changmin inconspicuously backs away from them, clearly wanting to have nothing to do with his hyperactive hyungs, or the fact that people were beginning to stare.

‘Where to first?’ Yunho asks, pondering over the map. Changmin smoothly corrects him - he’d been looking at it upside down.

‘There’s so many places. How do we decide?’ Junsu dismays. He wants to be everywhere at once, something like Su-perman.

‘By Wheel of Fortune,’ Jaejoong suggests, his finger making crop circles on the circular layout of the blueprint. He closes his eyes, randomly points, and opens them, landing on the words ‘Westernland’.

‘You chose well,’ Yunho says off-topic as they bundle in a flock, sticking close together so they won’t get separated or lost.

Jaejoong winks at him.

‘I never go for second best.’

// I might be a shabby person

who has never done anything for you

but for today, I am singing this song just for you
tonight, within those two eyes, and your smile
I can see all the pain you’re trying to hide from me

The members reach the shooting gallery, a wooden hut with shrubs lacing its sidewalk. It would have been an amiable cottage, if not for the animal heads hung on the wall.

Yoochun sniffs the air; the scent of cedar. He sneezes.

‘Bless you Chun,’ Junsu murmurs, squeaking when Yoochun threatens to blow snot at his face.

Yunho walks over to the live-sized version of bambi’s ancestor, beheaded and mounted on a hook. He spends a moment of silence, mourning over its helpless soul.

‘Hyung, you do know that’s a stuffed animal right?’ Changmin muses as the leader pretends he hadn’t just gotten emotional over a soft toy.

Embarrassed by Jaejoong’s laughter, the leader bullies the youngest band mate.

‘Yah yah Changminah!’ he rumbles, man-handling the magnae.

Changmin sniggers, striding off to the arcade, the leader making irrelevant comments behind him.

‘You know what they used to call me in high school?’ he asks the members, who brush his noise pollution aside.

‘Rodeo Romeo,’ Yunho answers himself, and Jaejoong guffaws at how cheesy it sounds coming out from a grown man.

‘You know why?’ Yunho continues absent-mindedly.

Yoochun snorts ‘I don’t think I want to know, hyung.’

‘Because -‘

Yoochun clamps a hand over Yunho’s mouth, stubborn victim still mumbling nonsense into his palm.

They manage to get Yunho to shut up, by handing him a gun.

‘Changmin bought us the license to kill,’ Jaejoong jokes as the magnae bonks him on the head with the butt-end of his rifle.

‘I get to bring home the grand prize if I shoot ten points?’ Yunho questions, gesturing towards the target. He takes aim and fires, looking impressed with himself -

Until Changmin sarcastically informs him that he hadn’t gotten enough to win anything, pushing the leader aside for Jaejoong’s turn next.

‘Babababababa!’ Junsu rattles, unloading imaginary bullets into Jaejoong’s back. Unfazed, Jaejoong scares the little critter away.

‘Jaejoongah, saranghae!’ Yunho cheers from the sidelines, wide grin and lop-sided heart over his head.

From the corner of his line of sight, Jaejoong catches the leader’s gaze on him. His heart skips a beat, and he presses the trigger before aiming, miraculously striking the bull’s eye.

‘For you,’ Jaejoong tells Yunho shyly,

offering the leader his grand prize.

‘For me?’ Yunho repeats,
clearly touched by the lead singer’s gift.

Two hours later, he still won’t stop his goofy grinning.

// you and I together it just feels alright
I will never leave you and no matter what

anybody says I’ll be there to protect you

The last thing Jaejoong wants to do, is risk his life sitting on that hugeass rollercoaster ride.

‘You have to,’ Yunho insists. ‘We came all the way here so you just have to, Jaejoongah.’

‘But why does it have to be so high? That’s not a rollercoaster, that’s a suicide mission, Yunhoyah,’ Jaejoong whines.

Nope, it’s really not because he’s afraid of heights or anything like that.

Psssht, no.

Disgruntled, Yunho sits Jaejoong down on a bench, boss-style. ‘Just follow me and no one’s gonna get hurt, Jaejoongie.’

Yoochun chuckles. Jaejoong looks like he’s going to fall for it - Yunho’s smooth talk.

Then finally;

‘This is the last time I’m going to cook dinner for any of you,’ Jaejoong grumbles. ‘If I lose my mind up there, I’m going to poison all of you to death,’ he warns.

‘No problem,’ Changmin quips, because toxic or not, his hyung’s cooking was always tasty. He’d be dying a happy man.

‘I don’t think I’ll make it out of this alive,’ Jaejoong says when they reach the forefront, buckling up inside their seatbelts.

Yunho wraps an arm around Jaejoong, acting tough.

‘Don’t worry, nothing will happen if you’re with me,’ the leader says, and it’s all Jaejoong has to cling on to - his word.

The train jerks forward, creeping towards the summit and building up on the suspense. Junsu makes a constipated face just as it reaches the tip and -

‘Not yet,’ Yoochun tells him, spazzing at the relief on Junsu’s face. ‘It will stop here for about five seconds before - ‘

The train plunges. Yoochun nearly pees in his pants. Junsu almost has a heart attack. Changmin waves and shouts ‘BANZAI’ to the people downstairs.

In front, Yunho is hyperventilating from shock.

Jaejoong looks over, face pale. ‘Didn’t you say no one was gonna get hurt?’

Yunho braces for second impact. ‘I didn’t know it’d be this - Yah! We’re gonna die, we’re gonna die!’ he cries as the train plummets from another ninety-degree angle.

By the end of it, there’s no strength left in their legs.

‘Testing one, two - I think I’ve lost my sense of hearing,’ Jaejoong mutters, trying to knock the air out of his eardrums.

‘Yunho hyung was screaming so loudly it scared me more than the actual ride,’ Yoochun confesses, wearing his bunny mask over his eyes.

‘It wasn’t me!’ Yunho desperately explains, flailing about with his hands to brush off all accusations against him.

‘You have possibly destroyed my ability to differentiate between higher and lower octaves,’ Jaejoong teases, recalling how Yunho had been shrieking like a high school girl. 'I’m tone-deaf all over again,’ he says.

The leader sits closer to Jaejoong, who’d been brave enough to come along in the first place. He turns to face the older man, shaking out his feet to stop them from wobbling.

‘I’d like to go for another round once my legs stop trembling,’ Yunho admits.

With you. With Yoochun and Junsu and Changmin.

The other members look at him with wide, fearful eyes, but Yunho remembers how his heart had been hammering, how he’d clung to Jaejoong like his life had depended on it.

‘I’ll go with you, Yunhoyah,’

Jaejoong tells him courageously.

‘Later, if we have the time, let’s do it.’

// you and I together

don’t ever let go my hands
I’ll never say goodbye to

you even when this world ends

The aromatic scent of fried tempura and sweet corn flavor floats amongst the breeze, calling out to five starving band mates. After their rollercoaster trauma, all of them want something to eat.

Yoochun fishes out a roasted piece of chicken meat, offering some to Junsu. ‘Want?’ he asks, reeling his hand back in when Junsu opens his mouth to bite.

‘Buy it yourself,’ he tells Junsu childishly, paying for it in full when Junsu strangles his neck for misleading him.

Yunho interrupts, offering the lead singer his half-eaten red bean popsicle. He wants to be Jaejoong’s center of attention.

‘It’s melting,’ Jaejoong tells him, day-dreaming as the leader drips small splatters of pink on the concrete floor, forming puffy polka-dotted hearts that -

‘Hyung! Can we go to the haunted house?’ Yoochun demands, picking up pace while the other members trail blindly behind.

They falter at the castle’s grand entrance, an aura of mystery surrounding its doorstep.

Changmin tugs on Jaejoong’s sleeve. ‘Hyung, if you’re not gonna eat that can I have it?’

The older man chuckles, handing him the bag of chips. ‘For a moment there I thought you were about to tell me that you were too scared to go in,’ he says.

The magnae stone-faces. ‘Do I look frightened to you?’ he asks.

‘Nope,’ Jaejoong acquiesces.

‘Then please,’ Changmin gestures.

‘Can we go in already?’

(part two: a rotting skeleton falls on Yoochun)
