Oh, I actually feel terrible for Cesan - he was really in a lose/lose situation, something I don't think his kids are quite ready to give him credit for. :(

Great scene, though!

I agree that Rodney and Jeannie really don't give their dad enough credit, but then again, when do those two ever give anyone enough credit?

Thanks! I worried that this section was a little too much telling and not enough showing, so I had John put some stuff together on his own.

I've never been a big fan of the McKay family backstory in cannon (I didn't like that both John and Rodney had pretty bad parents), so I thought I'd make Cesan a little more human.

How is the legal and social status of a dominus and a secundus, what is the difference?

There isn't any legal difference between the two in terms of their rights, but there are rules about the Secundus - like one partner can't run away with the secundus and abandon the Dominus without legal consequences. Also, a Secundus must be reproductively compatible with at least one of the partner, etc. The main idea is that secundus is not a way around the relationship with the dominus, but is a complement to that relationship.

John loved Rodney with all his heart, but Rodney’s brilliant dysfunction sometimes crossed the line into unpredictability.

Yes. Sheppard recognizes himself in McKay. Sheppard and McKay in battle=unstoppable. Sheppard and McKay personal life=fractured.

first part was supposed to be italics but LJ wouldn't turn off the damned

I agree. I love John and Rodney's dysfunction on screen and I love to write them, but you could not pay me enough to be a member of their relationship.
