Clearly, I've gone insane

I've asked the MetaFilter hivemind what, exactly, would happen directly after the final scene of White Collar if it had happened in real life.

So, those who want to write post-episode fanfiction, you might want to keep an eye on that question.

*omg could I be more of a dork*

fandom:white collar, could i be any more of a dork, metafilter, show:white collar

No. You could not be more of a dork. That is why we love you.

And now that you mention it, wow, that would be something to see - especially in frigging New York! OMG

I hope they deal with that in the premiere next season.

I gotta wonder how they could just brush it off next season--there has to be *some* mention/repercussion/explanation of what happened next.

Well, I'd say the FBI is going to be there for sure because Peter and Neal are involved, but the actual crash investigation is not in there jurisdiction.

In general for accidents involving private jets (which that plane was) at private airstrips the local authorities (NYPD in this case) have initial jurisdiction, but I'm pretty sure that one of the first things they are going to do in a case like this is call both the FAA (Federal Aviation Admin) and the NTSB (National Transportation Saftey Board). The FAA will have the info regarding the plane registration and flight plan etc., the NTSB would be in charge of the accident investigation and would be the ones determining how and why the plane went kaboom.

Here is a bit of vid with a state trooper talking about the investigation into a small plane crash (a Cessna, not a jet) in Urbana:

Doh!, I of course meant "their" jurisdiction, not "there" jurisdiction

Airports are generally considered under the joint jurisdiction of HLS and the FAA. But there are a few wrinkles to consider:

1 - The explosion happened at a private jet hanger, and a private plane, on the ground. which doesn't have the same ramifications as a crash/explosion on takeoff or midflight - whether it's better or worse, I'm not sure. Definitely different though. There would be an NTSB (a department now within HLS) investigation first, to determine the cause of the accident. Only when it's determined that the plane was bombed would/should the FBI get involved.

2 - I don't think that Peter and Neal stuck around to be questioned. Neal's life is in jeopardy now, and I'm sure Peter's none too safe too, considering the USB drive he has, with all of the Mentor information. Hey, guess what - I just wrote this in a fic. (Not really intending to pimp my work, just didn't want to re-write it, that's all ( ... )

I haven't read your story, but it seems out of character for Peter to leave the scene of an explosion when he was the only eyewitness (Neal's back was turned). The fact that he was there at all, let alone fled before authorities could question him, would be suspicious, and he of all people knows how these things work. As much as he'd want to get Neal out of there, I don't think he'd shirk the process.

As for Neal's life being in jeopardy, I don't think that he's in danger at that moment, since the ambulances and firetrucks are going to arrive immediately, and Peter will call 911, bringing the police as well--and then call Hughes, bringing the FBI. Whoever set that bomb is long gone.

I think I disagree with you about Peter's character and his mindset at the moment. He just put two slugs into a fellow agent's chest, without knowing if the man was wearing a bullet proof vest. I think, at this point - Peter's almost without an anchor. No badge, no civil authority. He just saw his friend almost get killed by people who work for the same agency he does.

But we'll find out eventually - I don't like wishing my life away, but summer can't come soon enough for me!

I totally agree with you regarding Peter's current relationship with the FBI, but running from the NYPD, the TSA, and possibly Homeland Security might not be in their best interests.

My feeling, though, is that the next season is going to start up months later. I can't see how they can start season 2 right where they left off season 1. And yes, I really do wish it were July already. ;)
