White Collar: a question about Elizabeth in three-way fiction

Feb 26, 2010 17:09

Obvious point is obvious: if you don't care for threeway fiction in White Collar, this is not the post you're looking for. ;)

I'm thrilled, absolutely thrilled, that so many fans have embraced the idea of Elizabeth/Peter/Neal, but I've noticed something odd about most of the three-way stories I've read in this fandom.

Oh right - I've read that one. Okay, that's one. :D But the majority of what I've read still falls under my main point. I'll start compiling a list of the ones where El gets fucked (I'd love to see some where it's Neal, even if it's Peter and then Neal, or Neal and then Peter, or whatever). Don't get me wrong, I love the guys fucking one another, but I feel like El is being treated as... I don't know. It's weird.

That's the one I was going to mention.

I know I've read several. Unfortunately, I don't bookmark fic, so I don't have them to hand, but if I come across them again I'll let you know.

I know that sometimes after I've been writing slash for a long time, writing het feels... weird, I guess. None of the words for female anatomy sound right. And personally, I really like reading about oral sex, that's easier to 'get right' than penetrative sex, in terms of critical reading, if I can really say that in this situation.

Also possibly that there's more writers who aren't sure how to translate Neal's obviously submissive role into het sex? That's a little troubling and hopefully untrue, but it's a thought...

Maybe because I'm not all that concerned with/attached to the D/s facet of this fandom (or any fandom, really), I don't view it that way. It's not that I don't see where it is, and why D/s fans are all over it, but I don't think Neal comes across as a "yes, master" kind of guy. A con artist, by nature, can't be submissive ( ... )

I'm not into the D/s facet so much either, but I definitely prefer the reading of Peter and El being the more aggressive partners.

And I meant that oral het is what I prefer to read, I have less trouble writing it than I do penetrative sex, and so when I as a reader am judging the fic I'm reading, I've only got my own writing experience and preferences to judge it on. And it is still a pretty small fandom, so it's got time to grow.

Really, so long as we keep getting lots of awesome OT3, I'll be happy. I've started even shying away from fics that are just labeled Peter/Neal (though I did read one that was labeled P/N PG-13 Gen, and yes it was gen, there was no P/N, there was more P/E than P/N. I -- don't know).

Okay, clearly I need to get the unfinished things on my hard drive posted. *g*

I know svilleficrecs has stories where Elizabeth gets very well fucked, but then sville is someone who generally writes quite a bit of het fic, whereas most of the slash writers on my flist don't.

I do think that some of the stories I've read have Elizabeth in them more because the writer respects her role in Peter's life than because they find describing a woman in the act of sex hot. I tend to find in all fandoms I'm in that few writers really write porn with female characters as though it turns them on. Which strikes me as somewhat odd, but then I love having sex with women in real life, so maybe that makes my perspective different, I don't know.

I don't even know what's on your hard drive, BUT I AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT.

Maybe that's a part of it... possibly I'm just befuddled because, when I started in fandom, I was a gen fan. I was twelve, and just on the edge of going SEX OMG. In my later teens, I was all into the het romances on my shows, so I read a lot of het fanfiction, but I couldn't understand the fascination with slash, and had no interest in reading any of it. Then in the early '90s, I was at a con where someone was selling Quantum Leap slash zines, and I was like, "What? Al's a HOLOGRAM? How are they having sex?!", so I had to buy it to find out what on Earth the writers were doing... and that's how I discovered slash ( ... )

Hm! I don't agree with it myself, but the only thing I can think of is that people can't see her fucking Neal, at least to start with, because that's kind of a line? So you have El ONLY being fucked by Peter, which sort of leaves Neal out in the cold?

Or, people are suffering from a lack of creativity. *g*

I... can see her fucking Neal. Especially because I believe Peter WANTS to see her fucking Neal.

Also, USA Network shot a bunch of their character-crossover interstitials today, that will air in the spring.

Neal and Peter meet Gus in a bar.

Neal is having drinks with The Big Show... o.O

Peter has something to say to Michael and Fiona.

Have you ever seen those USA interstitials before? I remember them doing one with Johnny from Dead Zone and Shawn from Psych in a diner, talking about psychic powers. It was hilarious.
