(Fic) Writer Picks the Music: The Family Business/Elegy for John

If you’d asked Bobby, just before he opened his front door on that spring morning, who he expected to see on his old porch, he probably would have said Rufus Turner, come to complain at him about old times for a while. Or Deputy Mills with a complaint writ in hand. Hell, maybe even one of those young cusses that Ellen kept sending to him for ( Read more... )

Beautifully written! I loved how you fleshed out the argument between John and Bobby and how it was all about the boys, and how Bobby struggles with his own personal feelings about John, but manages to find a way to mourn him, and perhaps even get John's blessing to watch out for them.

I'm really excited to see what you do for the next song! Personally I feel that it has to be about Sam and Dean, and maybe it could be a future fic seeing them finally getting their peace ow their work is done. But you could take that one anywhere, really. Looking forward to reading it.

Thank you so much--I'm glad that you like it! I felt like there have to be a million fanfics out there about Bobby threatening to shoot John, but I still wanted to do this one. In my heart I just knew the argument had to be about the boys.

Yeah, I agree, "Carry On" should be a Sam and Dean song. But will they ever have that peace? It's a quandry.

Thanks again for taking some time with this story. I really appreciate you stopping by!

This somehow synchs with the John in episode 300 - I don't know if you intended that or not, but it's a flavour I appreciate. I love your Bobby voice and POV! It rings so true.

Thank you so much! I'm glad that it works for you.

I didn't set out with the episode in mind--I actually started this before it aired--but I'm pretty sure that the John in "Lebanon" influenced the version in Bobby's dream. I wanted to leave it open as to whether the dream version had any basis in telepathy (Sam got his psychic powers from somewhere, right), was a visitation, or was just a dream--I like the idea that it was an actual message from John, and maybe this John was influenced by his own good dream.

This story took me right back to that time, wth all the feelings of sadness and frustration that ep brought, magnified because we get to see what's going on in Bobby's head too. Plus, we get proof that the boys were more than just part of the job to John.

Thank you for this excellent look into their lives. This is one of the reasons I really like that LJ sends those "You might have missed" notifications--I catch brilliant stories like this!

Thank you for reading it! I'm glad that you liked it--it's interesting to go back and look at events through other characters' eyes, right? And Bobby, well, his POV is irresistible to me, especially since at this point in the story his importance to the boys' lives hadn't been established. Plus, I always wanted to write my head canon that his fight with John must have been about Sam and/or Dean.

Your comment was a delightful surprise today--thank you again, very much, for stopping by and reading a bit!

Oh, that's lovely. Poor Bobby, sitting at the fringes of the boy's life their whole lives seeing the mess John was making of their lives and powerless to stop it. I think you captured Bobby's well-deserved animosity towards John perfectly. And I love that John visited Bobby, one last time, to ask him to take care of his boys. Just wonderful.

Wow--Thank you! I'm really glad you liked it. Your description of Bobby sitting at the fringes is perfect. I hadn't quite thought of it that way; I think you're absolutely right!
