Two weeks and three days.
That was the duration of his absence from Budehuc, but those days had seemed as long as the twenty odd years away he spent longing for the mage. While he knew a small part of him had appreciated being home--at last--and would've liked to stay there longer, being here in the Grasslands was uncoiling the tension he'd had accumulated from the absence of a beloved presence. His gaze rested on the younger male's form, the sight of him a feast for his aching heart.
The rucksack that he was carrying, heavy though it was, was a reassuring weight on his back as he followed Luc's lead toward the cafe. Ever since his answer to the mage's inquiry, the silence had settled between them, one that was not of the most comforting type.
What could've happened during his time away that would cause such caution from the Tenkan, Tyr asked himself as he tightened his grip on his possessions.
As rare as it was, Luc would actually agree if someone were to say that McDohl's absence took longer than just a mere two week and a few days... The events that ensued right after the old Tenkai's departure were more stressful than it seemed. Though the mage was sure everyone else would have found his reaction was a bit too much over the works of a little girl with some... strange hobbies. But there were a number of things on the line here.
One of them was of course his remaining pride. Another was his privacy... the rest. Well the rest was just total disgust and possibly a growing fear of people of the similar sex, all thanks to the mixed mortification he's received from Shoon, Sheena, and confusion from McDohl. Although, those last few parts were still unknown to his consciousness. The talking crab was apparently female, but it was nearly just as odd in its own way.
He had actually kept to himself mostly since the evening he spent in the bar, drinking with Sheena. Actually... there goes another rare event. Alcohol seemed to have a stranger side effect on him... though his memory became the least reliable. To be honest... his silence was really just his inability to figure out what would be best to tell McDohl first... or figuring out if any of this was worth even telling him.
Luc then stopped suddenly the moment he reached the cafe area then changed directions to what undoubtedly was leading down towards the docks. The cafe was still within that girl's easy reach after all... It was best to take this discussion where it was active enough that no one would think twice about seeing two people talking to each other in public.
These issues were unknown to the last McDohl and though he was itching to hear what Luc had to say, Tyr simply kept on walking after the brunet, taking note of their new direction with some comfort. There were many things he could speak of to the mage in the cafe without worry over breach of privacy, but he did prefer having a bit more freedom to speak his mind. Who knew whether the news Luc would tell him didn't require that too?
Regardless, the lake was a pleasant sight as they walked closer to the mild activity of the docks. It might have been a bit difficult to ignore the presence of fishermen who were comfortably waiting for fish to bite and the ship crew moving about, but all were minding their own business. Having orders and schedules of their own to fulfill, they paid no heed to the quiet duo of passerby.
Luc kept walking through the small population quietly, up to the wooden planks that extended out from the pier. Only when they finally neared the end of the worn out fishing ward did his pace slow down and soon came to a stop just a few steps short of the last board. At that, the younger male finally turned to McDohl, raising a hand to his forehead while the other went to his hip and let out a sharp sigh.
"I guess this should be far enough." He said with some lingering irritation in his voice. "Well? What kind of answer did you want? A safe one? Or should I just explain it straight out?"
At this point, the older bearer could probably put down his burden if he wanted, but he hadn't a clue whether this would be a good idea considering their proximity to the water. Instead, he listened to Luc with care, clearly hearing the irritation in that first utterance.
"Explain it straight out," he chose. A safe answer wouldn't give him a full portrait of the events that passed here.
The wind mage glanced at the Tenkai cautiously at first before lowering his hand to his side while a forced smirk slowly formed upon his ageless face.
"Well... right after you left, it seemed that Sheena and I have been fated to each other by the whims of a lustful love affair." He surmised with an indisputable sarcastic undertone to his voice. "Or so a story states."
The smirk that appeared on Luc's face was less than reassuring in all honesty. Put on edge, the man could only frown in doubt as he awaited the mage's reply, only to be seized with disbelief, horror and cold raging anger as the words uttered were registering in his mind.
Where had this nonsense come from!?
"A what!?" Tyr choked as he stared at the Tenkan, his grip gone tight around his luggage. Any violent actions against their surroundings was hardly conductive to finding out where this originated from since he knew that neither of his comrade had such impulse toward each other.
"Well." Luc glanced at him as his expression returned to its usual calmness. "Now you know how I felt when I first saw it. Someone's taken an interest in our personal lives, only putting quite a number of adjustments to their liking. That's why I took you aside here to keep rumours from going around."
He suddenly moved off towards the end of the wooden pier, taking a seat on the ledge before letting out another sigh.
"The whole fiasco exploded right after you left. Even Sheena was acting like a moron for a while... You should be thankful you missed out on all the fun. I had to port a stupid knight and a few dozen members of the local wild life to the origin's premises to feel better. Aside that..."
There was that stupid old man, daring to nag him about his behaviour... stating that he was immature to have acted as thus. Everything he would have done to defend himself would have been seen as immature anyway. It was either kill them or force them away... And what the hell was with the deal of these people seeming to believe like he was in this place to make better of himself. Like hell he was...!
Dammit... even thinking about it was making him angry again.
"No... Nevermind." He muttered darkly.
It must be so damned convenient to frolic around in the name of heroism when the person that was being saved didn't deserve it. Just why the hell was he stuck in this place anyway...?
The Toran Tenkai hardly thought that such a happening was 'fun' when it involved wildspread unfounded rumours.
Yes, there had been that comment a few months back about nonexistent nightly activities between Luc and he which he'd taken with a calmer disposition--he later paid attention to the castle's rumour mill and heard nothing about it--but it at least had a sliver of truth in it. Tyr wanted a relationship with the mage in the first place after all.
These so-called adjustments on the other hand were an entirely different matter. Sheena, he knew, had not a single shred of interest in males, his attention focused solely on the fairer sex--the more of them the better. As for Luc, the Tenkan had trouble enough in accepting the older male's affection that it was simply ridiculous to even insinuate that he'd seek out anyone's bed.
Of course, Tyr was aware of the bias he held toward anything related to Luc. He knew how easily that could colour his judgement since he'd unfairly taken out his anger on the Chimei before, and so he took a deep breath, mentally counting up to ten before he tried to reply to anything the mage was saying.
"So you already took revenge," he concluded aloud when he was a bit calmer, his tone still dark. "That's too bad." Because he would've wanted to help with a trick or two.
Though, that obviously wasn't all that went on during his absence, Tyr figured, as Luc wouldn't properly finish his sentence.
"What else happened?" was the quieter inquiry.
"........." Again, Luc fell silent for a moment. "Nothing. Sheena just wants you to go drinking with him."
That was right. Whatever else happened was none of the man's business. He wasn't about to whine to anyone about his many issues with the people in this castle anymore than he already had.
"He's wondering what sort of drunk you'd come out to be."
It was best kept this way.
Tyr could take a hint that Luc didn't want to talk about what else happened, but he certainly didn't believe it to be nothing.
"If you're sure..." he answered with the tiniest of sighs, putting his burden down and sitting down next to the brunet. "I'm here if you ever change your mind though..." he trailed off as he shifted his gaze toward the mage, the offer clearly made before he even dared give any thought to the other topic offered.
"... Yeah." Luc muttered as he squeezed his bare hands together, not having any intention right now to further disclose his frustration. "About Sheena though. What are you going to do?"
Luc's agreement was sufficient for now.
Propping himself back with his hands, the older man thought about this other matter. 'Lovesick drunk' was probably the kindest description he could give for his last drunken experience, but he honestly didn't know if he wanted to go drinking again. For sure, he could be careful of his alcohol intake and avoid being too intoxicated, but that was without taking others into account.
"I don't know," he said truthfully, a wry smile appearing on his face. "My last venture in the bar wasn't so interesting." But then he'd been less than happy at the time and that made quite a difference. "Are you going to come along?"
The wind mage gave him a quick surprised glance.
"Oh." Well... duh, the man was older and probably had ventured upon the 'joys' of drinking. There were times in the past when Viktor and the others already tried to encourage the man to drink with them. He would have to admit though... finding out what sort of drunk the historic hero of the Toran Republic was a little intriguing.
"Hmm..." Luc droned thinking about an exchange he had made with Sheena. "... Depends." If Sheena manages to do his side of the bargain, that is.
Funny. He hadn't expected Luc to be so surprised, but... then again, they hadn't been in contact for a number of years. The Tyr McDohl Luc probably remembered hadn't tried alcohol despite their comrade's encouragement, such development having come only years after the Dunan Unification War had ended.
At least, as he waited for the mage's reply, the proposal wasn't completely rejected. He did wonder what would make Luc agree to come along though.
"On?"
"My mood." He said curtly.
"Oh." That wasn't something he could control. He could indeed try to influence the mage's mood, but the decision was ultimately Luc's. "And would you go in your current mood?"
The younger rune bearer this time raised a brow as he threw him a look that was obviously displeased with the idea. He wasn't going back in there unless given a good reason.
So, Luc wasn't in the mood to mingle with the bargoers. That was fine by Tyr though since he didn't want to be in the tavern at the moment, highly preferring this quiet setting. Of course, they wouldn't remain here forever, but it was a bit of time alone spent with the mage.
He smiled to himself, aware that the Tenkan might take it in the wrong way, but unable to help himself. The mood had to pick up at some point and he still had a last souvenir from Gregminster to deliver.
"Do you want to see your new wardrobe?" the older man asked as he indicated the bulging rucksack.
"Now?" Luc grumbled as he hunched forward to rest his elbows on his lap and stare down at the calm lake waters lazily. "Are you that eager to see me get changed?"
Tyr went still at that suggestion. Honestly speaking, he'd only meant for Luc to look through the purchases he brought back for him, but that was...
"Do you want me to answer that truthfully?" the Tenkai spoke softly as he peered at the other's face.
Really, he wouldn't want to see Luc get changed out in the public, but in private was an entirely different matter.
...Well, Luc did mean that to be a joke himself. A reply of that sort from the other man would just make it sound pretty...
It was then that the wind mage's hand flew straight for McDohl, landing right against his face with a light smack.
"I don't even want to know what you're thinking of saying." He said irritably while he continued to push at his former Tenkai's features to look away from him. "At least the two weeks hasn't changed you one bit."
'Ah,' thought the Tenkai as he found himself looking at the mage through forceful fingers. No surprise there since he had expected a reaction--not necessarily this sort of physical abuse, even if the mage wasn't strong enough to forcefully make Tyr look elsewhere, but something that was quintessentially Luc.
It made him smile a bit.
"I didn't plan to come back a changed man," he retorted, grabbing the other's wrist with his left hand and pulling it down. "But really, I want to know if you'll like your souvenirs."
After all, he generally knew what Luc thought of his own fashion sense. It wouldn't do for the items he brought back to be unappreciated by Luc, even if he had asked help in order to not bring anything the mage wouldn't like.
"............... Can't it wait until later...?" he mumbled before pulling his wrist away, feeling self conscious all of a sudden.
Luc almost had forgotten a view of such actions by that child could result to who knows what. And he has honestly had enough 'who knows what's for the next 3 months.
Used to watching his own actions and words to keep his true thoughts out of the rumour mill, Tyr just kept on smiling even as the brunet pulled away with a mumble.
"I guess it can," he agreed, knowing that Luc would eventually tell him anyway if his purchases were horrible.
That aside, he didn't particularly care to be included in any work of fiction--like Milich's, though the Flower General had taken the spotlight in it--especially when it wouldn't portray his entourage and he correctly. It did make him curious over who would be so bold as to write something so wrongfully inaccurate, but the retribution he'd carry out could be potentially worse than Luc's own.
Soul Eater was unsilenced after all.
"You know," Tyr started in a non-sequitur, "I really wanted to try to visit Lady Leknaat during my time in Toran, but none of the Dragon Knights were available."
Luc nearly jumped and turned to him with a glare.
"Why?" he asked in a tone higher than usual.
"No~thing," the Toran native answered lightly, a grin appearing on his face. "She's your mother figure, isn't she?"
"M-Mo...!" Luc caught himself before he ended up standing up completely and shouting at the other man.
His glare intensified as he sat back down completely, and then raised both hands against his face with a sigh.
"Are you insane?" he muttered harshly under his breath. "Where the hell does that tie into anything...? What the hell are you thinking..?!"
Insane? Certainly not.
"Well," he started, only to whisper for Luc's sole hearing, "properly asking her if I could pursue you but..." and continuing on in a normal tone, "you did say not to see her, so I haven't. Though, it would've been a pointless trip anyway since my rune unsealed itself the moment I arrived home."
Not that he couldn't have asked for a solution to Luc's imprisonment.
Ask her what?! Luc's thoughts came into a sudden halt; the rest of what McDohl said almost completely flew passed his attention.
Again, the younger rune bearer began to brood. It was a good thing that Soul Eater was unsealed, he supposed... but... what? Ask Leknaat what?!
"................................................"
While he knew that such notion would shock the brunet who obviously didn't think of such manners regularly, that prolongued silence was a bit worrisome.
"Luc?" he asked, leaning closer to the mage to look at the brooding face.
Really, he only meant to tease his companion.
Still, the wind mage remained silent, partially seething in his annoyance and his confusion... Punching McDohl wasn't an option considering he still kind of lacked the ability to do that. Or at least to cause enough physical pain for the other to get a very clear idea that he was pretty damned displeased.
Then again, getting frustrated now was a waste of time. So it was best not to do anything.
'Right...' Luc thought as he finally moved to get up from the pier and walking behind McDohl, only to place his foot right at the middle of the man's back and giving him a good, hard push.
It wasn't just a little worrisome. By now it was becoming an actual worry. On hindsight, he should've found another topic to tease the mage with.
"Luc?" he called out to the other bearer as he watched him stand up and walk about. "I'm sorry, really. I swe-"
He barely had the time to register the foot on his back and to brace himself before he hit the water, head first, in a great, spectacular splash.
"Hmph..." Luc huffed as he folded his arms before him, finding some comfort from seeing McDohl fall into the water easily, and then waited for the older man to surface before saying a very clear "Welcome back by the way." and walking off towards the castle with the intentions of retreating to his quarters.
Water dripping down into his eyes and expulsed out of his orifices, the Tenkai barely heard his Tenkan's words before he found himself staring up at empty air, the younger man's footsteps moving away.
"......" he sighed with a wry smile as he climbed back up onto the pier. "Thanks, Luc."
It really was nice to be back.
