Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: House, M.D. is not mine.

Cameron had married a dying man.

She had met him and loved him and married him, had sat by his bed and wiped his brow and held his hand; and even though she could have reached out to his best friend--wanted to, so badly--she didn't, because she couldn't allow herself to, not when she still saw her dead husband's face when she closed her eyes.

He still haunted her; in her photo albums, in her dreams, in the faces of the men she liked and wanted to love. He still haunted her; in her desperation, in her failures, in the regret that filtered into her heart as the sun filtered through the drawn blinds.

After the funeral, Cameron had taken the ring off and placed it in her jewelry box. In her loneliest moments, she took it out and ran her fingers over the straight, hard edges of the diamond; she traced the silver girdle that held the diamond fast, and cried when she remembered the way his arms had felt when he had held her close.

Then Cameron had run into Cuddy at one of the hospital's fundraisers, and later they had gotten drinks together, and sometime that evening the barriers of the officers had disappeared and they had wound up in bed, quickly becoming infatuated.

Cameron had met and loved and married a dying man once.

Years later, she was ready to fall in love again, with a woman who was full of life.
