[Rl with Zechs]

Tyki had woken abruptly from a disturbing dream in which he was eviscerating people with his bare hands. As he turned to seek comfort from his lover he rolled over, only to find that the other side of his bed was bare and cold ( Read more... )

Usually, it was routine. Get in the ZERO, use it for about four hours, shake off the afterimages - some of what he had seen would be very intense - then slip back in bed with Tyki. Zechs usually didn't fool anyone. But he worried his husband less when he at least awoke there beside him.

That night, he had been in the Epyon, connected with ZERO, for a little over six hoursThere were fail-safes involved, no matter what Tyki feared. Zechs had installed a system about two years ago which would shut the ZERO system down and open the Epyon's cockpit hatch if his heartrate became too high. He did his research. Heart failure usually killed an inexperienced pilot in the ZERO system before an enemy did. The first year he installed it, it happened only four times. Last year? Almost a dozen ( ... )

Tyki entered the hangar just at that moment and saw Zechs lying on the floor, gasping for breath, inches from a pile of vomit. He looked like he'd been on a week's bender - no, a month - and was having a terrible reaction.

"Zechs!" he yelled and raced across the room, skidding to a halt and dropping to his knes beside Zechs. "Zechs, my god, what...what do I do?"

He'd never seen a ZERO reaction this bad before. Zechs' heart was racing under his fingertips, and his breathing was laboured.

At first, Zechs couldn't even tell it was Tyki who was there. There were lights and flashes and sounds all around him - images of people, mobile suits, strange creatures, both real and fictional experiences all rolled into one. When Tyki touched him, he jerked roughly, trying to find a gun, pushing him away with his arm.

But no, he smelled someone human and real nearby, and clung with his hands after his minute of confusion passed. Still, he hadn't recognized him. Zechs didn't want to be left alone for a heartbeat, even if he had to kill whomever this was later. His chest still squeezed tight, and spots of black appeared in his vision. Stay conscious, he told himself again. You are not allowed to black out. Breathe.

Finally he saw it was Tyki before him. He saw other things around him, too, but was reasonably certain his husband was real. Yet paranoia gripped his brain, and he asked, his voice too dry and barely audible, "Tyki?"

Tyki was definitely distressed by the way Zechs pushed away from him at first. He clung to his lover, trying to hold him down and stop him from getting away or possibly hurt himself. It seemed to Tyki that Zechs was hallucinating.

He relaxed slightly as Zechs began to relax, and he breathed a sigh of relief as he heard his name come to his lover's lips. "I'm here," he said, stroking his lover's hair, trying to soothe him. "I'm right here. Everything's going to be okay."

This time Zechs could hear Tyki over the roaring sound in his ears, though his lover sounded very far away. He shook his head as a negative response, though the motion made him too dizzy to bear. His stomach rolled again, and he closed his eyes, pressing his face into Tyki's chest, drinking in the scent. He might have been bruising with his grip.

"You are here," Zechs echoed, hardly able to speak. He couldn't hear his own voice, anyhow. His throat felt rather like he'd swallowed a cactus. Paranoia began to grip him again. "But you can't stay. There is a man, with ears like a bat's, who claims your life and will. He'll send his other children after you, should you stay with me. And even his enemies will strike you down, with that mirror-image of a sword ..."

Zechs was still shuddering, his fingers twitching, almost as if he were still in the suit. "Nothing makes sense. I was trying to look for answers here, but I kept seeing other places instead. What I saw here was so peaceful, Tyki, so green -" His heart was speeding up erratically ( ... )
