Beauty and the Beast:
Tea and Cookies
Beldon was in his workroom, no doubt doing something mysterious and Enchanter-ish, when court ended. Herb politely dismissed the various attendants, thanking them for their service, and made his way through the castle to his lover's domain. The number of people out and about thinned dramatically the closer he got to the section of the castle set aside for Beldon's use, and vanished entirely once he got to the hallway leading to the workroom itself.
Unsurprising, even if it was occasionally exasperating. But Beldon wouldn't really be Beldon without his infamous temper, and so Herb just smiled tolerantly and nudged the door open with his toe. There was no shriek of outrage or the sound of something crashing, so he deemed it safe to enter.
Carefully, so as not to upset the tray he carried, Herb let himself in and paced over to the smallest table, and the only one not covered in strange magical paraphernalia, and set down his tray. A moment's search located Beldon, kneeling on the floor, apparently intent upon something.
Long accustomed to his lover's ways, Herb waited until Beldon sat up, turning his head and spotting Herb waiting.
"Oh." He glanced once more at the thing on the floor, then gracefully rose and walked over to Herb, pulling Herb down for his greeting kiss. When he let go, he looked inquisitively at the tray now occupying one of his tables.
"Part of a gift from one of the northern vassal kingdoms... Hedgewig? Horoscope? Something like that," Herb provided helpfully in answer to the unspoken question.
"Ah." Beldon summoned the chairs from wherever they'd been hiding, and the two of them sat down to enjoy the tea and cookies. The tea was one Beldon hadn't tried yet, though it smelled pleasant, and the cookies were cut into fascinating shapes. Best of all, they were bite size.
Which meant he got to feed them to Beldon, if Beldon was feeling agreeable. Always an uncertainty, Beldon's moods, but Herb was fairly adept at reading them. Still, he would admit to a certain nervous feeling as he held the first cookie up to Beldon's mouth.
For a moment it seemed as though Beldon was going to be contrary, then his lips parted to accept the sweet, nibbling it slowly, one tiny little bite at a time, and Herb relaxed completely. Beldon not only wasn't being difficult, he was playing. That meant it was likely to be a very nice afternoon indeed. Especially considering that Beldon carefully licked the crumbs off Herb's fingers when all of the cookie was gone.
Herb fed the rest of the cookies, one at a time, to Beldon, alternating with a bite here and there for himself. When they were gone, he scooted his chair around so that he could pull Beldon into his lap, feeling happy and content when Beldon didn't even give a token protest.
Which meant that nothing had gone wrong today. That was nice. When spells went right, there was less chance of things accidentally blowing up. Or turning into things they weren't supposed to. Although Herb was still curious as to what had been so interesting about the floor.
"Beldon...?" he asked cautiously, getting a vague sound in response. "What were you working on? When I came in?"
"Mmm." Beldon sat up a little straighter, glancing over to the section of floor where he'd been kneeling. "I had a little accident with a transformation spell."
Herb blinked. Accidents usually meant a snarly Beldon, but Beldon wasn't snarly, so...
"I meant to make another bunny for your collection," Beldon continued thoughtfully, "but I believe I transposed something..."
"So, um, what is it?" Herb asked curiously, when Beldon didn't seem inclined to elaborate further.
"Oh, it's a bunny," Beldon replied. "Mostly."
Herb blinked. "Mostly?"
Beldon twisted to look up at him, a faint smirk curving his lips. "Well, I don't think normal bunnies have leathery wings and breathe fire..."
Herb's eyes widened. "You made me a fire-breathing bunny?" He beamed and hugged Beldon tightly. "Thank you!"
Beldon smiled and snuggled into his embrace. "You're welcome."
